McNeill and Hend Lead Principal Charity Classic After First Round

This article details the opening round of the Principal Charity Classic golf tournament, highlighting the strong performances of co-leaders George McNeill and Scott Hend. It covers their scores, their current standing relative to other competitors, and offers insights into their recent form and strategies.

Experience and Adaptability: The Keys to Early Success

McNeill and Hend Set the Pace at Principal Charity Classic

Golfers George McNeill from the U.S. and Scott Hend from Australia concluded the opening round of the Principal Charity Classic in Des Moines, Iowa, in a tie for the top spot.

First Round Highlights: A Shared Lead

Both McNeill and Hend delivered impressive 7-under-par 65s at the Wakonda Club. This stellar performance gives them a narrow one-stroke advantage over a group of four competitors: Vaughn Taylor, Tag Ridings, Australia's John Senden, and the defending champion, Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, all of whom are at 6-under 66.

McNeill's Remarkable Debut Season on PGA Tour Champions

Having reached his 50th birthday last autumn, McNeill is currently enjoying his inaugural season on the PGA Tour Champions. His rookie year has been marked by consistent success, as he has successfully made the cut in all eight events he has entered, securing two runner-up finishes. Notably, one of these was at the recent American Family Insurance Championship team event, where he partnered with Kenny Perry.

McNeill's Strategy: Consistency and Adapting to New Challenges

Reflecting on his performance, McNeill expressed confidence in his ongoing play. He noted, "Honestly, I'm just trying to play like I have been. I feel like I played fairly well all year." His first round included an eagle on the par-5 13th hole, complemented by six birdies and only one bogey. He acknowledged the learning curve of new courses, stating, "But again, all these courses are brand new to me so there's a lot of stuff that I'm looking at it and reading putts and greens. These guys who have been here year after year after year, it helps. So I'm just trying to play like I have been, get out of my own way."

Hend's Momentum: A Recent Victory Fuels Strong Performance

Scott Hend's round was punctuated by nine birdies, with an impressive four of them coming in the final six holes. This strong showing follows his breakthrough victory last month at the Trophy Hassan II in Morocco, marking his first win on the PGA Tour Champions.

Hend's Approach to Unfamiliar Courses: Learning on the Fly

Despite his success, Hend admitted that it typically "takes more than a couple days" to fully acclimate to a new course. However, this did not hinder his ability to score low on his first visit to Wakonda. He humorously recounted, "I didn't play the last four holes, so I didn't know what the last four holes were like. So got on the 18th tee, I said to my caddie, ‘Where's the green?' He's like, ‘I think it's over there.' He walked up trying to get the proper line. I'm just trying to learn the golf course and hopefully by Sunday afternoon I'll know what to do."

The Chasing Pack: A Talented Group Within Reach

Currently tied for seventh place with a score of 5-under 67 are Doug Barron, Matt Gogel, Brett Quigley, Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal, Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke, and Australians Richard Green and David Brandson. This competitive field sets the stage for an exciting weekend of golf.
