Despite achieving significant milestones, including a men's basketball national title this year and the football program's 2023 national championship, these successes were insufficient to secure Manuel's continued employment. Manuel's decision to terminate Moore came after an internal investigation into the coach's relationship with a subordinate, prompting the university to expand its probe into the overall departmental environment, incurring substantial legal fees. Manuel had previously addressed the relationship with Moore and the assistant, both of whom denied any impropriety, and an examination of their school-issued devices yielded no grounds for immediate dismissal.
Manuel, 58, a former Wolverines football and track athlete, assumed the role of athletic director on January 29, 2016, and had signed a contract extension in 2024 slated to last until June 2030. Overseeing a vast department with an annual budget of approximately $250 million, 29 teams, over 950 student-athletes, and around 400 staff members, Manuel led Michigan to several victories, including national titles in men's and women's gymnastics. He was also honored with the John L. Toner Award in 2024 for his exceptional administrative contributions to college athletics and served on the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, chairing it during the inaugural 12-team playoff season. Before his tenure at Michigan, Manuel held athletic director positions at UConn and Buffalo, following various roles within Michigan's athletic department from 1996 to 2005.
