Bertram "Buzzy" Caruthers Joins as Player Development Director
The Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team officially welcomed Bertram "Buzzy" Caruthers to their ranks as the Director of Player Development. While an official press release from the university's athletics department is pending, Caruthers' inclusion has been confirmed through the U-M athletics directory.
Caruthers' Extensive Coaching Background
Caruthers brings a rich background in collegiate basketball to his new role. Before joining Michigan, he served as an assistant coach at Ball State in 2024. His career also includes a two-year stint at Missouri State from 2022 to 2024 and three years at Nebraska (2019-2022), where he previously held the title of director of player development. His diverse experience across multiple programs positions him well to contribute significantly to Michigan's development initiatives.
Completing the Coaching Ensemble
Caruthers' appointment finalizes the Wolverines' coaching staff, following the recent additions of Mike Martin from Brown and Dylan Murphy from Osceola Magic. These new hires fill the vacancies created by the departures of Justin Joyner (now with Oregon State), Drew Williamson (joining the Dallas Mavericks), and Mike Boynton Jr., who assumed the head coach position earlier this summer, succeeding Dusty May.
A Journey from High School to Collegiate Excellence
A Kansas City native, Caruthers began his coaching journey at Barstow High School from 2007 to 2011. He was also instrumental in co-founding MoKan Elite, a program that has since become one of the nation's premier travel basketball organizations. Additionally, he dedicated a year to his alma mater, Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, during the 2011-2012 academic year, further solidifying his grassroots involvement in basketball development.
Anticipating a Challenging Season Ahead
With the new staff in place, the Michigan basketball team is poised for a busy schedule. In less than a week, they will embark on an international tour spanning Lithuania and Croatia from August 21-29. Upon their return, the team will have under two months to prepare for their exhibition games, which includes a high-profile showdown against Houston at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on October 25, setting the stage for an exciting season.
