In a strategic move to address their beleaguered bullpen, the Milwaukee Brewers have officially incorporated right-handed pitcher Joel Kuhnel into their active lineup. This acquisition, finalized on Saturday with the Athletics for cash, aims to inject critical depth into a pitching staff currently grappling with multiple injuries as the team gears up for its series against the A's.
Kuhnel's addition to the roster, announced prior to Monday's game, follows the optioning of right-hander Craig Yoho to Triple-A Nashville. Yoho had recently been called up and made two appearances during the Brewers' successful weekend sweep in Colorado, surrendering a single run over three innings.
Prior to joining Milwaukee, Kuhnel had compiled a 1-2 record with a 4.21 ERA and four saves across 25 outings for the Athletics this season. However, his recent performances have shown some challenges, as he allowed seven runs on 12 hits in his last eight innings over seven appearances. His most recent outing saw him give up four runs in the ninth inning, resulting in a 7-6 loss against the Cubs.
The Brewers' need for bullpen reinforcements has become acute in the past week, with three left-handed relievers—Rob Zastryzny (left trapezius strain), DL Hall (left pectoral strain), and Brian Fitzpatrick (left UCL strain)—all being placed on the 15-day injured list.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy indicated that Kuhnel would be utilized as required, emphasizing the immediate need for pitching depth. Murphy stated that while Kuhnel might not initially be placed in high-leverage situations in the seventh, eighth, or ninth innings, the team would not hesitate to use him in crucial moments depending on game conditions and the health of other pitchers.
In other roster news, veteran right-hander Jake Woodford, who was designated for assignment last Friday, declined an outright assignment to Triple-A Nashville and has instead chosen to pursue free agency. Woodford, acquired from Tampa Bay a week before the regular season, posted a 1-0 record with a 6.94 ERA in 16 appearances for Milwaukee.
The integration of Kuhnel underscores the Brewers' proactive approach to managing their pitching resources amidst a challenging period of injuries. His performance will be closely watched as he steps into a role designed to stabilize the team's relief corps and contribute to their ongoing campaign.
