In a thrilling week of high school athletics, spanning May 4th through 9th, 2026, the Monroe area witnessed exceptional performances across multiple sports within the LHSAA postseason. The News-Star highlighted several outstanding individuals and teams for their remarkable efforts.
On the baseball diamond, Drew Browning, a senior from Weston, demonstrated his power with a home run as part of a 2-for-2 performance in an 8-3 quarterfinal victory over Holden. Devyn Downs, a junior from Sterlington, delivered a masterful pitching display, throwing nine innings with only two hits allowed, securing a 3-0 semifinal win against South Beauregard. Not to be outdone, Sterlington senior Miller Sheets contributed significantly with a home run and four RBIs in a decisive 5-0 semifinal victory against South Beauregard. Cedar Creek's junior Kade Luker showcased a formidable two-way performance, hitting a home run with three RBIs and striking out 12 batters over 5 2/3 innings in a 4-3 quarterfinal triumph against Riverside Academy. Gavin Polk, a senior from Ouachita Christian, pitched a masterful three-hit shutout with six strikeouts in a tight 1-0 quarterfinal win over Ascension Episcopal, while Mangham's sophomore Nolan Gandy went 3-for-3 with four RBIs in a quarterfinal victory against Delcambre.
Track and field events saw a flurry of championships. Joley Bennett, a sophomore from D’Arbonne Woods Charter, claimed the LHSAA Class 2A individual javelin title. West Ouachita's senior Madison Boyd clinched the LHSAA Class 4A individual championship in the 300-meter hurdles. Delhi Charter junior Tayven Carter was a dual champion in Class 2A, securing titles in both the long jump and triple jump. Jonesboro-Hodge senior and LSU signee Ciara Gray dominated Class 1A, winning three individual championships in the 300-meter hurdles, long jump, and triple jump. Leah James, a senior from Cedar Creek, secured the LHSAA Class 1A individual championship in the 400-meter dash. West Ouachita senior Jack Kelley triumphed in the LHSAA Class 4A individual 3,200-meter run. Presley Parks-Smith, a junior from Sterlington, earned the LHSAA Class 3A individual javelin championship. Ouachita senior Cody Nelson claimed the LHSAA Class 5A individual triple jump title. Jaxon Talley, a junior from West Monroe, was the LHSAA Class 5A individual javelin champion, and Simsboro senior Amaren Woodard won the LHSAA Class B individual 200-meter dash. Team success was also prominent, with Delhi boys track and field securing the LHSAA Class 1A individual championship in the 4x400-meter relay, and Ruston girls track and field clinching the LHSAA Class 5A individual championship in the 4x800-meter relay. Quitman track and field had an exceptional outing, sweeping the LHSAA Class B titles with six individual champions, including Nathan Harvey (300-meter hurdles), Gage Horton (400-meter dash and 1,600-meter run), Kaleigh King (300-meter hurdles and pole vault), and Asher Shultz (javelin), alongside victories in the boys' 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relays.
In golf, Cedar Creek boys golf team secured the LHSAA Division IV team championship, with junior Alex Roebuck and freshman Jase Martin both finishing in the top five. Neville junior Maddox Mowad claimed the LHSAA Division I individual championship, showcasing his exceptional talent.
