Cross Country Relays: Huron and SMCC Crowned Champions
The 44th annual Frank Connolly Cross Country Relays saw New Boston Huron and St. Mary Catholic Central (SMCC) clinch the girls' team titles. Huron secured the Division 1 championship with a commanding 21 points, surpassing Dearborn Divine Child (38) and Airport (48). Coach Cassandra Roupe expressed pleasant surprise at Huron's victory, attributing it to the team's dedicated training. All three Huron teams placed within the top 13, with notable performances from Zoey Cheney, Grace Pacheco, Isa Vargo, Kayla Christesen, Lauren Macon, and Alexis White. Airport's strong showing was led by Maddie Agocs, Ellen Baker, Abbey Ward, and Kendal Kleman. In Division 2, SMCC secured their crown with 64 points, with key contributions from Ella Hendrick-Juleigh Husby, Makayla Markgraff-Genevieve Sottile, and Lizzie Wright-Kylie Dubke. Whiteford finished second, spearheaded by Breslin Wing-Braelynn Chiotti's ninth-place finish. Jefferson's Randee Mulherin and Claire Miller also achieved a commendable sixth place. In the boys' competition, Dearborn Divine Child claimed the Division 1 title, while Blissfield emerged as Division 2 champions. SMCC's Phineas Totten and Christian Craanen achieved a second-place finish, closely followed by New Boston Huron's Tanner Kuhn and Cameron Crane in third.
Volleyball Highlights: Whiteford and Bedford Shine
Whiteford's volleyball team secured a decisive victory against Summerfield with scores of 25-17, 25-7, 25-23. Macy Ovall dominated with 22 kills, while Addy Hill orchestrated the offense with 33 assists. Avery Welch contributed significantly on defense with 25 digs for the 8-2-1 Bobcats. Summerfield's efforts were led by Bridget Salenbien (7 kills, 9 digs) and Hailey Hunter (8 digs). Meanwhile, Kennadi Goulet of Bedford delivered an outstanding performance at the Motor City Power Series, recording 28 kills with an impressive .322 hitting percentage. Her efforts propelled Bedford to victories over Rochester Adams (25-21, 21-25, 25-21) and Walled Lake Northern (25-12, 25-19). Blair Russow (26 digs), Olivia Eby (37 assists), and Anna Gray (11 kills, 4 blocks) were also crucial to the 6-4 Mules' success. Dundee faced a challenging match, falling to Clinton with scores of 25-10, 25-23, 25-15, despite solid contributions from Mckenzie Heath (8 kills, 2 blocks) and Lacey Evans' strong defensive play.
Soccer Success: Huron Maintains Winning Streak
New Boston Huron's soccer team continued their impressive run, extending their winning streak to five games with a 3-0 shutout victory against Belleville. Marton Krajcz was the offensive star, netting two goals, while Gonzalo Aragon added another. Goalkeeper Todd Elliott secured his fifth clean sheet of the season, showcasing the team's strong defensive prowess. Assists were credited to Maverik Bazzy and Hunter Campbell.
Swimming Dominance: Monroe Remains Undefeated
Monroe's swimming team maintained their perfect record, moving to 5-0 with a dominant 143-29 triumph over Ypsilanti. Ava Dowen excelled with victories in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Sophia Smith claimed first in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and Karis Beaton was a double winner in the individual medley and backstroke. Other notable performances came from Emma Boyd, Blayne Lynch, Morgan Kleinow, Sophia Mason, and Madison Mahoney, highlighting the depth of talent within the Monroe team.
Golf Tournaments: Local Champions Emerge
The Green Meadows Golf Club tournament concluded with Nick Phillips taking home the championship flight title after defeating Marc Villemure in the finals. Megan Yinger was crowned the women's champion, triumphing over Jimilynn Durocher. Other flight winners included Garrett Diesing (A), John Bulger (B), and Marv Hicks (Senior), with Keith Fisher, Bob Schuster, and Bob Dushane securing second place finishes. In other golf news, Austin Straub of Milan achieved a significant milestone by sinking his first hole-in-one on Friday, September 8, at Dundee Golf Course, using a 7-iron on the second hole.
