NC State Explores Coaching Options, Interviews Saint Louis' Josh Schertz

North Carolina State's search for a new head basketball coach is underway, with reports indicating an interview with Saint Louis coach Josh Schertz. Following Will Wade's departure to take the head coaching role at LSU, after leading the Wolfpack to a 20-14 record and an NCAA Tournament berth in his single season, NC State is actively exploring candidates.

Schertz, 50, has garnered significant attention, having recently secured a lucrative six-year, $20 million contract extension with Saint Louis on March 13. This extension was signed shortly after he reportedly declined an interview request from Kansas State, signaling his value in the collegiate coaching market. His tenure at Saint Louis has been marked by impressive improvements; he guided the Billikens to a 29-6 record in the 2025-26 season, culminating in an NCAA Tournament second-round appearance. In his inaugural 2024-25 season, Saint Louis improved to 19-15 from a previous 13-20 record, also clinching the Atlantic 10 regular season title. Prior to Saint Louis, Schertz led Indiana State for three seasons, achieving a notable NIT championship game appearance in 2023-24 and compiling an overall record of 114-61.

Beyond Schertz, other names have surfaced in connection with the NC State vacancy, including Tennessee associate coach Justin Gainey, a former NC State guard from 1996 to 2000. As the Wolfpack navigates this transitional period, the decision on their next coach will undoubtedly shape the future trajectory of the program.

The pursuit of a new coach represents a pivotal moment for North Carolina State basketball, offering an opportunity to build upon past successes and chart a course for sustained excellence. The selection of a leader with a proven track record, like Josh Schertz, can infuse the program with fresh energy and strategic vision, inspiring both players and fans toward a future filled with promise and achievement.
