New Initiative to Develop High School Sport Captains into Community Leaders

A groundbreaking partnership between the Heisman Foundation and the Aspen Institute is set to empower high school sports captains, cultivating their leadership potential to drive positive change within their teams, schools, and local communities. Recognizing the often-underestimated influence of sports captains, this collaborative effort aims to equip young athlete-leaders with essential skills and resources.

The newly established Aspen Institute Captains Leadership Academy will provide a comprehensive program featuring specialized training, mentorship opportunities, and practical tools. These offerings are designed to enable participants to tackle pressing societal challenges, such as promoting equitable access to youth sports, supporting mental health initiatives, and enhancing overall community well-being. This innovative academy underscores the profound belief in the transformative power of youth sports participation on American society.

By investing in the development of these emerging leaders, the initiative seeks to not only improve the sports experience for the captains and their teammates but also facilitate the transfer of these invaluable, sports-based leadership qualities into future careers and broader civic engagement. This collaboration, significantly bolstered by the Heisman Foundation's largest grant in its history for youth development through sports and education, aims to create a robust cohort of leaders. The program will initially launch with pilot programs in select states in 2026, with ambitious plans for national expansion by 2027, ensuring widespread accessibility of its resources to schools, coaches, and student captains.
