New Mexico State Aggies and Florida International Panthers Conclude Baseball Season in High-Scoring Affair

The New Mexico State Aggies concluded their 2026 baseball season in a spectacular offensive display, participating in a game that saw an astonishing 51 combined runs. Despite scoring an impressive 21 runs themselves, the Aggies ultimately fell to the Florida International Panthers, who racked up 30 runs in what became a memorable season finale for both teams. This contest, held in Las Cruces, stood out as an anomalous event in Division I baseball, showcasing an unprecedented level of scoring.

The May 16, 2026, matchup between the Aggies and the Panthers was a statistical marvel, setting itself apart as the only Division I game of the season where both teams surpassed the 20-run mark. This scoring explosion placed it in rare company, with the last comparable event being Rhode Island's 36-22 triumph over William & Mary in February 2025, and Milwaukee's 26-21 victory against Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne in April 2005. The game dramatically overshadowed other high-scoring contests of the season, such as Boston College's 26-19 win over Connecticut in March.

New Mexico State initially held a competitive edge, with Boston Vest's three-run double in the fourth inning giving them an 8-7 lead, which they expanded to 11-7 by the seventh inning. However, the Panthers unleashed an overwhelming offensive surge in the latter part of the game. FIU erupted for 11 runs in the seventh inning, seizing an 18-11 lead, and extended their dominance with another six runs in the eighth, pushing their advantage to 24-13. The Aggies attempted a late comeback, scoring six runs in the bottom of the eighth to avert a mercy-rule defeat, with Aiden Taclas hitting a two-run homer in the ninth, but it was not enough to overcome the Panthers' onslaught.

The Aggies' 21-run performance represented their highest score against a Division I opponent since their 22-run outing against Jacksonville State in April 2024. This season, their previous high was 16 runs in a 10-inning game against New Mexico and in a seven-inning run-rule victory over Prairie View A&M. The team's overall season high against any opponent in 2026 was a remarkable 39 runs against the University of the Southwest.

The game featured a total of 98 at-bats, with FIU taking 55 and NMSU 43. Six players, including five from FIU and NMSU's Steve Solorzano, recorded at least four hits. The contest also saw five home runs, four of which were hit by Panthers players, with Taclas accounting for the Aggies' sole home run. A total of 18 pitchers, 11 from NMSU and 7 from FIU, took the mound, contributing to a high-walk, high-hit-by-pitch, and high-double game. Only two pitchers, Matthew DelVecchio of FIU and Connor Wylde of NMSU, managed to complete their appearances without surrendering any runs.

Notably, at least one run was scored in every inning, with multiple runs occurring in 11 of the 18 half-innings. The teams combined for 44 hits, with FIU securing 28 and NMSU 16. FIU boasted an impressive .509 batting average for the game, while NMSU's leadoff hitters were perfect, going 9-for-9. This decisive loss meant NMSU concluded their season with 10 defeats in their final 11 games and suffered losses in their last six Conference USA series, failing to qualify for the CUSA Tournament. The game provided a dramatic and offensively charged conclusion to Coach Jake Angier's third season at the helm.
