New Orleans Pelicans Appoint Jamahl Mosley as Head Coach

The New Orleans Pelicans have officially named Jamahl Mosley, previously a coach with the Orlando Magic, as their new head coach. While reports from ESPN indicate a five-year agreement, the team has not yet confirmed the specific duration of his contract. Mosley becomes the tenth head coach for the Pelicans since the franchise's inception into the NBA in 2002.

This coaching change comes after the Pelicans' decision to dismiss Willie Green on November 15th, following a challenging 2-10 start to the season. James Borrego, the former head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, served as interim coach for the remainder of that season. Joe Dumars, the Pelicans' executive vice president of basketball operations, expressed confidence in Mosley's capabilities, highlighting his respected leadership, professionalism, and ability to build strong relationships with both players and staff. Dumars emphasized Mosley's consistent track record in developing young talent and fostering teams that exhibit resilience, discipline, and unity, attributes crucial for cultivating a sustained winning environment.

Prior to his new role, Mosley had a lengthy career as an assistant coach in the NBA before taking the helm of the Magic for the 2020-21 season. Under his leadership, Orlando achieved playoff berths in the last three seasons, despite two initial sub-.500 finishes, though they did not advance beyond the first round. Mosley's tenure with the Magic concluded on May 4th, immediately after their elimination by the Detroit Pistons in a seven-game series, a series in which Orlando initially held a commanding 3-1 lead. During his time with Orlando, Mosley accumulated a regular-season record of 189-221 and a postseason record of 7-12. Meanwhile, the Pelicans' performance under Green over five seasons resulted in a 150-190 record. They concluded the 2023-24 season as the eighth seed in the Western Conference with a 49-33 record, only to be swept by the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round. The subsequent season saw a significant decline, with the team finishing 21-61. Other candidates reportedly interviewed for the New Orleans position included Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Darvin Ham, Brooklyn Nets assistant Steve Hetzel, and Borrego. As of now, the Orlando Magic have not yet announced Mosley's successor.

The appointment of Jamahl Mosley signals a fresh chapter for the New Orleans Pelicans, reflecting a commitment to building a resilient and unified team. This strategic move aims to instill a culture of excellence and development, fostering an environment where young talent can thrive and the team can consistently compete at the highest level, inspiring fans and achieving long-term success.
