Utah State University recently celebrated its commencement, with over 6,300 students receiving their degrees. The ceremony was particularly notable as it marked the first under the leadership of new President Brad Mortensen, and featured an inspiring address from a distinguished alumnus, NFL linebacker Bobby Wagner. His speech resonated deeply with the graduating class, offering a unique blend of personal anecdotes and professional wisdom.
Bobby Wagner, a name synonymous with excellence in the NFL, has carved out an illustrious career spanning 14 seasons. His achievements are extensive, including 10 Pro Bowl selections, six First-team All-Pro honors, and a Super Bowl XLVII championship. Beyond his on-field prowess, Wagner was recognized for his broader impact, earning a spot on the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s and, in 2025, receiving the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award, which celebrates players who make significant contributions to their communities.
However, Wagner’s journey to becoming a Utah State Aggie and a football legend was far from straightforward. He revealed his initial hesitation to commit to the university, a feeling amplified by his visit, primarily due to the unfamiliar snowy climate. With USU being the sole institution to offer him a scholarship, his mother delivered an ultimatum: accept the offer or don't come home. This pivotal moment taught him a profound lesson about embracing unexpected opportunities. He shared that from the moment he stepped onto campus, he felt an overwhelming sense of acceptance and camaraderie from the students, faculty, and coaches, forging a deep connection with the university.
To this day, Wagner maintains immense pride in his Utah State roots, humorously recalling instances where he felt a slight offense when others in the NFL mistakenly assumed he had attended rival universities. He also took the opportunity to impart crucial career advice to the new graduates, stressing the paramount importance of networking in any field. He recounted an experience in the locker room where he overheard fellow NFL players, Richard Sherman and Doug Baldwin, discussing the invaluable connections they made through their alma mater, Stanford. This conversation spurred Wagner to actively seek similar relationships.
His pursuit led him to connect with Charlie Denson, a fellow USU alumnus who had a remarkable 30-year career at Nike, including a stint as the brand's president. Wagner emphasized that this connection proved instrumental, unlocking a multitude of opportunities for him in the business world. He underscored the strength and supportive nature of the 'Aggie family,' urging graduates to appreciate and leverage this network, as fellow alumni are genuinely invested in each other's success.
Wagner concluded his address with a lighthearted yet impactful remark that delighted the audience, proclaiming that while other prestigious universities might be "cool," they simply don't compare to Utah State. He extended his heartfelt congratulations to the graduates, acknowledging their achievements as merely the beginning of their journeys, and expressed his steadfast belief in their future triumphs.
