Unyielding Spirit: The Path to Atomweight Glory
A Hard-Fought Victory at Lumpinee Stadium
Anastasia "Anniemale" Nikolakakos showcased her resilience and skill at Bangkok's renowned Lumpinee Stadium, preserving her perfect professional mixed martial arts record. Facing Jihin "Shadow Cat" Radzuan in an intense atomweight confrontation at ONE Fight Night 45: Lessei vs. Rabah, Nikolakakos secured a split-decision win, extending her undefeated streak to 7-0.
Reflecting on a Grueling Contest
Following her impressive first-round knockout debut against Victoria "Vick" Souza in March, the Canadian contender, representing Gracie Humaita Bolton, was ready for another demanding test. This subsequent fight pushed her limits significantly, yet the 36-year-old expressed deep contentment with the outcome. She stated, "We were prepared everywhere. There are always things that you want to improve on during a fight... but all in all, I'm very blessed, I'm very grateful, and I'm happy with the outcome."
The Dynamics of the Bout
The fight was a thrilling exchange from start to finish. Nikolakakos initially controlled the tempo, leveraging her superior ground game to assert dominance and challenge the 27-year-old Malaysian star. However, Jihin skillfully adjusted, finding her rhythm with striking and effective clinches in the second round. The decisive final minutes saw the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt utilize her strong takedowns, ultimately doing just enough to sway the judges in her favor.
Self-Assessment and Future Improvements
Despite the close nature of the contest, "Anniemale" maintained a critical view of her own performance. "I felt that I won unanimously. But when they said split decision, I think it was just from maybe my eye being puffy," she commented. Rating her performance a seven out of ten, she acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly in delivering more damage both on the ground and during stand-up exchanges. She emphasized the importance of refining her techniques for upcoming challenges.
Acknowledging the Opponent and Maintaining Focus
Nikolakakos’s candidness extended to her assessment of Jihin Radzuan, noting that her opponent's relentless stand-up pressure was exactly as anticipated by her coaching team. Unfazed by any surprises, Nikolakakos reiterated her philosophy of focusing primarily on her own preparation. "I don't pay much attention to anybody else, to be honest. I didn't even know her name going into this... I just stay focused on myself, and whatever my coaches tell me," she explained.
Setting Sights on the Atomweight Championship
With two significant promotional victories under her belt and an unblemished 7-0 record, the Toronto native has clearly articulated her ultimate goal: the vacant ONE Women's Atomweight MMA World Championship. Whether this opportunity arises immediately or requires further advancement through the ranks, Nikolakakos is resolute in her dedication. "It doesn't matter who else [I have to face], or whoever's next. God willing, we'd win, and we'd get that belt," she declared, affirming her belief that she is next in line for the coveted title.
