Nolan Smith's Impact: TSU Basketball Coach Receives Extended Contract Through 2031

Coach Nolan Smith, renowned for his impactful leadership, has officially signed a two-year extension, committing his future to the Tennessee State basketball program until 2031. Athletic director Mikki Allen announced this significant development on April 7, highlighting Smith's rapid success and vision for the team.

Smith, a distinguished alumnus of Duke and former assistant coach, was initially appointed on July 18, 2025, with a three-year agreement. His first season at the helm was nothing short of exceptional; he steered the Tigers to an impressive 23-10 record, culminating in their triumph as Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament champions. This historic achievement marked the program's return to the NCAA Tournament after a long hiatus since 1994, making it only their third appearance in institutional history. Although their journey in the NCAA Tournament concluded with a first-round defeat to Iowa State, the team's performance under Smith garnered widespread recognition.

The athletic director praised Smith's immediate and transformative effect on the program, commending his purposeful leadership, vibrant energy, and unwavering pursuit of excellence. Smith's passion for the university has reinvigorated the community and significantly boosted TSU basketball's national standing. This well-deserved extension not only provides stability and forward momentum but also sets the stage for continued prosperity under his guidance. TSU President Dwayne Tucker echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Smith's elevation of the program within a single year and expressing full confidence in his leadership for the future of TSU athletics. Smith's commitment to cultivating sustainable success is evident, as he expressed his eagerness to continue building a program that instills pride throughout the Tennessee State University community.

Under Smith's innovative guidance, the team developed a dynamic, high-scoring offense, leading the OVC with an average of 80.5 points per game, alongside a formidable defensive presence. This era also saw the emergence of several all-conference players, including the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, Aaron Nkrumah. Previously, Smith served as an assistant coach at Memphis during the 2024-25 season and spent two seasons prior at Louisville, enriching his coaching experience. His dedication and strategic approach have clearly resonated, setting a bright trajectory for Tennessee State basketball.
