North Carolina Baseball Dominates 2026 MLB Draft with Seven Selections

The 2026 Major League Baseball Draft witnessed an outstanding performance from the University of North Carolina's baseball program, with a total of seven players from the "Diamond Heels" being chosen. This impressive showing underscores the depth of talent within the team, with four athletes securing spots within the first 100 selections and an additional three joining the professional ranks on the draft's second day. This signifies a monumental achievement for the UNC baseball team, marking their most successful draft in recent history.

The initial phase of the draft saw several key players from North Carolina make significant strides. Jake Schaffner led the charge, being picked 20th overall by the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox continued to show interest in UNC talent by also drafting Owen Hull at the 67th position. Jason DeCaro was subsequently chosen by the Pittsburgh Pirates at pick number 80, followed by Ryan Lynch, who was selected by the San Diego Padres at 97. This early wave of selections, with four players in the top 100, established a new benchmark for the program, showcasing their ability to produce top-tier prospects ready for the next level.

As the draft progressed into its second day, rounds 5 through 20 brought further good news for the Tar Heels. Catcher Macon Winslow was a notable pick, going to the Philadelphia Phillies in the 6th round as the 190th overall selection. Winslow's transition to professional baseball comes after a single impactful season at Chapel Hill, where he demonstrated significant offensive and defensive capabilities. He concluded his collegiate tenure as the team's fourth-highest RBI producer and home run hitter, while also boasting the Atlantic Coast Conference's second-best caught-stealing rate, earning him Third-Team All-ACC recognition. Prior to his time at UNC, Winslow had a productive two-season stint at Duke, where he honed his skills behind the plate and in the outfield.

Pitcher Matthew Matthijs also made his way to the professional circuit, with the Seattle Mariners selecting him in the 17th round as the 520th overall pick. Matthijs, a four-year veteran for the Tar Heels, concluded his collegiate career with a commendable 4.48 ERA and 153 strikeouts over 128.2 innings pitched. His senior year saw him primarily utilized in a relief role, appearing in 27 games. However, his breakout season came as a sophomore in 2024, where he posted an impressive 12-4 record with a 3.72 ERA across 36 appearances. His move to the Seattle Mariners organization further strengthens the growing presence of former UNC players within their ranks, including Luke Stevenson and Anthony Donofrio.

The final Tar Heel to hear his name called was Joseph Lawson, a versatile two-way player from Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers, Florida. Lawson was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 20th round, as the 595th overall selection. As an incoming freshman catcher, first baseman, and right-handed pitcher, Lawson had already committed to the Tar Heels before his draft selection, indicating the high potential recognized by both collegiate and professional scouts.

The 2026 MLB Draft proved to be a historic event for the North Carolina baseball program, with seven players making the leap to professional baseball. This exceptional draft class, featuring both seasoned collegiate athletes and promising newcomers, highlights the program's consistent success in developing talent ready for the challenges of Major League Baseball. The future looks bright for these former Tar Heels as they embark on their professional journeys, carrying with them the legacy of a strong collegiate program.
