The upcoming 2026-27 academic term marks a notable shift in the organization of high school athletics across Colorado, particularly within the northern regions. This new cycle, established by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA), introduces updated conference alignments that will shape competitive landscapes for the 2026-28 sports seasons. These adjustments will influence a wide array of sports, including but not limited to baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, tennis, and wrestling, although football maintains its own specialized conference structures due to its unique demands.
Several distinct conferences will define the competitive environment for Northern Colorado schools. The revitalized Front Range League, featuring eight teams, is expected to be a powerhouse in sports such as baseball, soccer, and softball. Concurrently, the Northern Conference is reverting to its traditional focus on 4A schools, encompassing institutions from the Fort Collins-Loveland-Greeley metropolitan area. Additionally, the expansive Patriot League, comprising seventeen primary members, will be subdivided into two divisions—Patriot League Peaks and Patriot League Plains—to manage its large roster. The Mile High League, known for its stability, continues to serve smaller schools that share similar religious and charter profiles, while the geographically advantageous Granite Peaks League will group institutions in close proximity, fostering local rivalries.
Further adjustments include Loveland Classical, Nederland, and Poudre Community Academy joining the Foothills League, and Skyline (Longmont) aligning with the Colorado League alongside suburban Denver schools. Front Range Baptist (Fort Collins) will continue its participation in the 5280 League, catering to 1A and 2A teams. These comprehensive changes reflect an ongoing effort by CHSAA to create balanced and competitive environments for all high school athletes in the region, ensuring dynamic and engaging sports seasons for years to come.
These strategic reconfigurations of athletic conferences underscore a commitment to fostering healthy competition and developing student-athletes. By grouping schools effectively, the CHSAA aims to provide opportunities for growth, sportsmanship, and excellence, encouraging young individuals to strive for their best both on and off the field.
