The Edmonton Oilers have reportedly secured authorization from the Toronto Maple Leafs to engage in discussions with Craig Berube regarding their open head coaching position. This development signals a significant step for the Oilers in their search for new leadership.
Recent Coaching Changes for Both Teams
Just days prior, on May 13th, the Maple Leafs dismissed Berube after two seasons. Coincidentally, on the very same day, the Oilers also announced the departure of their head coach, Kris Knoblauch, following a first-round playoff elimination at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks. These simultaneous coaching changes set the stage for the current interest.
Oilers' Quest for Playoff Success
After reaching the Stanley Cup Final in the previous two seasons under Knoblauch's guidance, the Oilers' early playoff exit this year has prompted a strong desire for strategic adjustments within the organization, leading to the pursuit of a new coaching direction.
Berube's Coaching Journey and Achievements
During his tenure with the Maple Leafs, Berube compiled a record of 84 wins, 62 losses, and 18 overtime losses. However, the team concluded the 2025-26 season with only 78 points, placing 15th in the Eastern Conference. Before his time in Toronto, Berube famously led the St. Louis Blues to a Stanley Cup victory in his inaugural season (2018-19) and also coached the Philadelphia Flyers from 2013 to 2015. His extensive coaching career boasts an overall record of 365 wins, 252 losses, and 90 overtime losses.
Broader Search for Coaching Talent
In addition to their interest in Berube, the Oilers also reportedly submitted a formal request to interview Bruce Cassidy, the former coach of the Vegas Golden Knights. However, as of Monday morning, permission to speak with Cassidy had not yet been granted, indicating that the Oilers' search for a new head coach is a comprehensive process.
