Koivunen, a native of Finland, made his initial foray into the National Hockey League (NHL) with Pittsburgh in March 2025. His journey to the Penguins involved a trade from Carolina in March 2024, where he was originally selected in the second round of the 2021 draft. This trade saw forward Jake Gunetzel move to the Hurricanes, bringing Koivunen to Pittsburgh, where he has since begun to establish himself.
