The PGA Tour has officially unveiled its extensive 2027 calendar, detailing a 33-event regular season that promises a fresh look and feel, particularly in its opening and closing stages, all leading up to the highly anticipated FedEx Cup playoffs.
A significant shift marks the commencement of the season, as the traditional Hawaiian tournaments, a fixture for 56 years, are absent from the schedule. Instead, the golfing year will now commence on January 21st with The American Express, held in La Quinta, California. Following this, the West Coast circuit will feature stops at Torrey Pines, with a new sponsor, and Pebble Beach, preceding the WM Phoenix Open. The latter event will once again align its final round with Super Bowl Sunday, a strategic move. The Florida swing also experiences notable changes, with the Cadillac Championship relocating to March, positioning it ahead of The Players Championship. The Valspar Championship moves to May, while the Arnold Palmer Invitational claims the mid-March slot. Further adjustments include the Sompo Championship in Napa, California, replacing the Rocket Classic, and a new primary sponsor, Raymond James, for the regular-season closer in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Looking ahead, the current three-event FedEx Cup Playoffs format will conclude after next year's competition. A substantial transformation awaits in 2028, when a new 90-player Championship Series Finale will be followed by an innovative two-event match-play competition, featuring an elite field of 32 golfers.
The PGA Tour's proactive restructuring of its 2027 schedule showcases a commitment to evolving the sport, enhancing fan engagement, and maintaining its position as a premier global golf circuit. These strategic modifications, from the geographic distribution of events to the playoff structure, aim to inject new energy and competitive dynamics into professional golf, ensuring its continued growth and excitement for both players and enthusiasts worldwide.
