This initiative is the brainchild of entrepreneur Ryan Connor, who recently launched a similar successful venture in Georgetown. His decision to expand into the Key City is deeply rooted in personal ties, with a son residing there and a daughter attending ACU, drawing him to the area more frequently.
Connor observed the burgeoning interest in pickleball in Abilene, noting the absence of specialized venues outside of university and country club settings. This insight fueled his ambition to introduce a purpose-built facility. The chosen location, a former movie theater at 1210 Russwood Drive, behind James McCoy's Drug Store on Judge Ely Boulevard and North 10th Street, was selected for its potential to house both indoor and outdoor courts. The ambitious plan includes three indoor courts, expected to be ready by August 1st, followed by the construction of six outdoor courts in the parking area, requiring a six-week concrete curing period. This setup aims to offer players diverse options, regardless of weather conditions.
Pickleball, a sport that dates back to 1965, was conceived by three Washington state fathers, including former U.S. Rep. Joel Pritchard. Seeking an engaging activity for their families, they improvised with badminton equipment, ping-pong paddles, and a Wiffle ball. The game's principles were largely adapted from badminton, emphasizing inclusivity for all family members. The name 'pickleball' is said to originate from the "pickle boat" races, dispelling a popular myth about a family dog named Pickles.
