Despite recent reports indicating that professional golfers Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood have fulfilled their financial obligations to the DP World Tour, including substantial fines, their aspirations of leading a Ryder Cup team remain unachieved. This development comes after both players faced penalties for their involvement with the LIV Golf series.
The fines, which reportedly amounted to approximately $1.1 million for Poulter and a similar sum for Westwood, were incurred due to their participation in the initial LIV event in 2022 and their subsequent absences from DP World Tour competitions. A representative for the DP World Tour clarified to GolfWeek that even with their membership potentially reinstated, a pre-existing 2017 regulation prohibits individuals who have abandoned their membership from assuming captain or vice-captain positions in the Ryder Cup. This bylaw was specifically established to address scenarios such as theirs, cementing their ineligibility for these significant leadership roles, irrespective of their current financial standing with the tour.
Initially, Poulter had expressed strong opposition to settling any fines, even dismissing the idea of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), a backer of LIV Golf, covering these costs on his behalf. However, the evolving landscape and uncertain future of LIV Golf appear to have influenced both golfers' decisions to reconcile their outstanding fines with the DP World Tour. Nevertheless, the resolution of these financial matters does not circumvent the established rules regarding Ryder Cup leadership, and both players would still face multi-week suspensions before being allowed to rejoin active play, a period anticipated to exceed two months.
