McClelland's Transition from Rice University

McClelland, who has been at the helm of Rice University's athletic department since 2023, is set to be formally introduced to the Purdue community during a press conference scheduled for Thursday.

A Legacy of Leadership: Succeeding Mike Bobinski

McClelland steps into the role previously held by Mike Bobinski, who earlier this year declared his intention to retire by the close of the current calendar year. Bobinski, 68, has been a driving force in leading the athletic department in West Lafayette, Indiana, since 2016, leaving a considerable legacy.

Early Career and Athletic Background

Before his administrative career, McClelland was a collegiate athlete at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where he excelled as a long snapper for the football team and a javelin thrower for the track and field squad.

Extensive Experience in Collegiate Sports Administration

McClelland's distinguished career in athletic administration includes serving as athletic director for two institutions in his home state of Louisiana: McNeese State from 2008 to 2013, and Louisiana Tech from 2013 to 2020. Prior to joining Rice, he also held the position of deputy athletic director at Vanderbilt University from 2020 to 2023, showcasing a comprehensive background in various leadership capacities within collegiate athletics.
