PWHL Hamilton Strengthens Coaching Staff with Two Key Appointments

PWHL Hamilton has made significant additions to its coaching team, welcoming Chelsea Walkland and Connor James as assistant coaches. These appointments mark the first key staff selections under head coach Kris Sparre, as the expansion franchise gears up for its inaugural 2026-27 season. The move is set to inject a blend of collegiate, international, and professional hockey experience into the team's leadership.

Chelsea Walkland joins the Hamilton organization with a remarkable background in women's hockey development. She most recently guided Bishop Kearney's U19 women's hockey team for two seasons as head coach. Prior to that, Walkland served as an assistant coach at Colgate University from 2019 to 2024, where she played a crucial role in securing four consecutive ECAC championships for the Raiders. Her time at Colgate also means she's familiar with some of Hamilton's current roster, having coached goaltender Kayle Osborne and defender Allyson Simpson during their collegiate careers. Walkland's expertise extends to the international stage, including her role as an assistant coach for the U.S. at the 2022 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship, where they earned a silver medal, and as head coach for the Collegiate Select Series in 2023, leading the U.S. to a dominant 3-0 victory against Canada.

Connor James brings a distinguished professional playing career and coaching acumen to PWHL Hamilton. A University of Denver alumnus, James was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 2002 and went on to play 16 NHL games with the Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins. His extensive 16-year professional journey included stints in the AHL and ECHL before he moved to Germany, competing in the DEL from 2009 to 2016, where he previously faced off against Kris Sparre. Following his playing career, James transitioned into coaching, spending seven seasons as head coach for the Burlington Eagles AAA program and also working as a skills coach for Shield Athletics. His leadership and profound understanding of the game are expected to be invaluable assets in shaping the team's performance and culture.

The strategic recruitment of Walkland and James underscores PWHL Hamilton's commitment to building a competitive and robust team from the ground up. Their diverse experiences, dedication to player growth, and strong character align perfectly with the franchise's vision of establishing high standards and a distinct identity. The Hamilton community, known for its passionate sports fan base, is eagerly anticipating the contributions of these accomplished coaches, as they work to foster a winning environment and an inspiring hockey legacy.
