In a significant move ahead of the trade deadline, the Boston Red Sox have secured the services of three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman. The prominent backstop was acquired from their American League East rivals, the Baltimore Orioles, in a deal announced on Monday.
The intricate trade arrangement saw the Orioles dispatch Rutschman and fellow catcher Jake Rogers, along with financial considerations, to Boston. In return, Baltimore received major league catcher Carlos Narvaez, promising right-handed pitching prospects Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, outfield prospect Enddy Azocar, and either a player to be determined later or additional cash. Rutschman, 28, has faced a challenging season marked by three separate stints on the injured list, including a recent placement due to left wrist inflammation, following previous issues with a concussion and left ankle inflammation. Despite these health setbacks, his performance when available has been notable; he has maintained a .251 batting average this season, contributing eight home runs and 47 RBIs in 67 appearances for the Orioles. Over his career, which began in 2022, Rutschman holds a .254 average with 69 home runs and 277 RBIs across 572 games. The acquisition gives the Red Sox control over Rutschman for the next season and a half, as he is slated for free agency before the 2028 season, following his final arbitration year in 2027.
Meanwhile, Jake Rogers, 31, who was recently acquired by the Orioles from the Detroit Tigers on July 30 to address their own catching shortages, played only three games for Baltimore, registering one hit in five at-bats with a single walk. His six-season tenure with Detroit saw him bat .197 with 47 homers and 138 RBIs. For the Orioles' incoming players, Carlos Narvaez, 27, hit .187 with three home runs and ten RBIs in 62 games during his second season with Boston. Anthony Eyanson, 21, is highly regarded as the Red Sox's No. 2 prospect and ranks 49th overall in baseball according to MLB Pipeline; the 2025 third-round draft pick has impressed with a 4-0 record and a 1.32 ERA in 16 professional games, including ten starts at Double-A Portland. Kyson Witherspoon, 21, a 2025 first-round selection and Boston's fourth-ranked prospect, holds a 3-5 record with a 4.78 ERA in 17 starts for High-A Greenville this season. Lastly, Enddy Azocar, 19, has shown promise by hitting .286 with 18 home runs and 63 RBIs across 85 games split between Class-A and High-A.
