Remembering TCU Legend Davey O'Brien: A Football Icon

As the much-anticipated 2026 season opener against North Carolina in Dublin, Ireland, draws near for TCU football, the countdown to kickoff offers a moment to reflect on the storied past of the Horned Frogs. With just eight days remaining until the season officially commences, we honor former TCU quarterback Davey O'Brien, whose iconic number eight jersey symbolizes his enduring legacy within the program.

Davey O'Brien stands as the sole Heisman Trophy winner in TCU's illustrious history, a prestigious honor he earned in 1938. Under the guidance of coach Dutch Meyer, O'Brien led the Horned Frogs to an impeccable 11-0 season, culminating in a national championship title. His extraordinary talent was recognized with two All-Southwest Conference First Team selections in 1937 and 1938, alongside unanimous All-American honors in 1938. During that monumental 1938 season, O'Brien achieved a then-record of 1,509 passing yards in the Southwest Conference, a benchmark that remained unbroken for a decade. He showcased remarkable efficiency, throwing 19 touchdowns against only four interceptions, and further contributed with three rushing touchdowns.

Following his stellar collegiate career, O'Brien was selected as the fourth overall pick in the 1939 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. In his rookie professional season, he immediately made an impact, leading the league in passing yards with 1,324, surpassing a record previously held by another TCU alumnus, Sammy Baugh. His exceptional performance earned him accolades such as NFL All-Star and First-Team All-Pro honors in 1939. O'Brien’s NFL career spanned two seasons before he transitioned to a decade-long tenure with the FBI. His profound contributions to football were further recognized through his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955 and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1956. TCU also honored O'Brien by inducting him into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1967, acknowledging his Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award during his time as a Horned Frog.

Davey O'Brien's story exemplifies the transformative power of dedication and talent. His achievements continue to inspire, underscoring the values of excellence and perseverance that resonate deeply within sports and beyond. His legacy serves as a beacon for future generations, demonstrating that with passion and hard work, extraordinary heights can be reached, not just on the field but in life's broader arenas.
