Her arrival is anticipated to inject fresh energy and a winning mentality into the program.
Rhode Island Welcomes Proven Leader Colleen Mullen to Helm Women's Basketball Program
In a significant announcement made on a recent Sunday, Athletic Director Pat Lyons officially introduced Colleen Mullen as the new head coach for the University of Rhode Island's women's basketball team. Lyons enthusiastically lauded Mullen's proven track record, highlighting her reputation as a formidable leader and her unwavering commitment to player development, both athletically and personally. He emphasized that Mullen's impressive coaching statistics speak volumes about her capabilities, and her innate ability to connect with student-athletes, guiding them to realize their full potential in every facet of their lives, is truly exceptional. The athletic department expressed immense excitement about her taking the reins of the program.
Mullen transitions to Rhode Island following a highly impactful eight-year tenure at Albany. During her time there, from 2021 to 2025, she steered the Great Danes to an extraordinary four consecutive seasons of achieving 20 or more wins, a testament to her strategic prowess and leadership. Her teams also made four consecutive appearances in national postseason tournaments, consistently demonstrating their competitive edge. Over the last five seasons, Mullen's Albany teams compiled an impressive overall record of 110 wins and 50 losses. Within league play, they maintained a dominant 59-24 record and secured an outstanding 65-11 record when playing on their home court.
Prior to her successful stint at Albany, Mullen served with distinction as the associate head coach at Army for seven seasons. Her contributions were instrumental in Army securing two coveted Patriot League titles, earning two bids to the prestigious NCAA Tournament, and making two appearances in the Women's National Invitation Tournament. Reflecting on her new role, Mullen shared her profound honor and excitement about leading the URI program. She conveyed her family's enthusiasm to become an integral part of the vibrant Rhode Island community. Mullen extended her heartfelt gratitude to URI President Marc Parlange, Pat Lyons, Brittney Miles, and Gina Sperry for their trust and the incredible opportunity to guide the team.
Interestingly, Mullen's connection to Rhode Island extends beyond her coaching career; she began her collegiate playing journey at the very same institution, suiting up for the Rams for two seasons from 1998 to 2000 before eventually transferring to New Hampshire. The esteemed URI coaching position became available on March 23rd, following the departure of Tammi Reiss, who accepted the head coaching role at Florida. Under Reiss's leadership, the Rams concluded their recent season with an admirable 28-5 record, ultimately falling in the first round of the Women's NCAA Tournament.
The appointment of Colleen Mullen signals a promising new era for the University of Rhode Island's women's basketball program. Her established history of success, commitment to player development, and prior ties to the institution create a strong foundation for future triumphs. This move underscores the university's dedication to maintaining a competitive and thriving athletic program, poised for continued excellence both on and off the court. It also highlights the dynamic nature of collegiate sports, with coaches and athletes continuously seeking new opportunities and challenges.
