The Atlanta Braves are poised to introduce their highly-touted pitching prospect, Owen Murphy, to the major league starting rotation this Saturday. This significant step marks a new chapter for the 22-year-old right-hander as he prepares to face the Texas Rangers in what will be his first start in Major League Baseball. Murphy's journey to this point has been characterized by consistent development and strong performances in the minor leagues, culminating in this eagerly anticipated debut on the grand stage.
Murphy, who currently holds a 0-1 record with a 2.25 ERA, will be matched against Texas's left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore, who has a 5-8 record with a 4.63 ERA. Murphy, recognized as the fifth-best prospect within the Braves' organization, has already made two appearances in relief since his promotion from Triple-A Gwinnett. In his most recent outing, last Saturday, he delivered an impressive performance, pitching three innings without allowing any runs or hits, and recording three strikeouts, despite the Braves' 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
His initial MLB appearance, however, resulted in a loss when he gave up two runs (one earned) over one inning during a 7-6, 10-inning defeat against the New York Mets on July 6. Murphy was the Braves' first-round pick in the 2022 draft. He posted a 4-6 record with a 3.88 ERA across 60 1/3 innings at Gwinnett, consistently limiting opponents to two or fewer runs in six of his eight starts. Before that, he had a 1-1 record with a 6.10 ERA in five starts for Double-A Columbus.
Murphy credited his progress to his coaches at Triple-A, Lance Carter and Tyler Dalton, stating, "They've helped me a ton and got me on the right track after a rocky start to the year. It's been great the past two months." His strong showing at Gwinnett, especially in recent months, has clearly paved the way for this major league opportunity.
On the opposing side, Gore is making his 21st start of the season. His last outing was on July 12 against the Houston Astros, where he pitched four innings, allowing one run on two hits and one walk, with four strikeouts, ultimately receiving no decision in a 6-5 victory. Facing a shortage of starting pitchers after Jacob deGrom was sidelined with a hip strain, Gore volunteered to start on short rest, showcasing his commitment and resilience.
deGrom praised Gore's eagerness, noting, "He wants the ball. Mac wants to step in any way he can. It says a lot about the competitor he is. He wants the ball. He's going to take it. It's cool to see." Gore, 27, has faced the Braves nine times in his career, holding a 3-3 record with a 3.56 ERA. Last year, he went 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two starts against Atlanta.
Texas manager Skip Schumaker also lauded Gore's competitive spirit, calling him "an unbelievable teammate, competitor. He always wants the ball. He's a 10-of-10 competitor." Meanwhile, the Braves, leading the National League East, commenced the series with a commanding 15-1 win on Friday night, highlighted by 19 hits and three home runs. Every position player in their starting lineup contributed a hit, with catcher Drake Baldwin notably collecting three hits and five RBIs.
Baldwin reflected on the team's strong performance, saying, "After a little break, you want to have something like this to get you going and get the confidence up. It's definitely a different part of the season with the playoffs coming up in a couple months, so it's super nice to start with that and kind of remind us of how good we really are." For the Rangers, Texas left fielder Wyatt Langford saw his eight-game hitting streak and 14-game on-base streak come to an end, going 0-for-3. Rookie Cam Cauley recorded a double on Friday, one of the team's five hits, and scored their only run. He has been hitting .333 (4-for-12) in his last seven games and .250 since his MLB debut on June 29.
Schumaker commended Cauley's aggressive style of play: "He plays one style, and that's all-out baseball. I'll take a hustle double anytime. I want him to play as hard as he can every time he plays. You obviously want to see more of that from him when he continues his career." As Owen Murphy steps onto the mound for his first major league start, both teams will be looking to build on their recent performances, with the Braves aiming to extend their lead and the Rangers seeking to rebound in the series.
