The Colorado Rockies announced Wednesday a significant roster change, placing their prominent right-handed pitcher, Victor Vodnik, on the 15-day injured list. The decision stems from an inflamed right ulnar nerve, commonly referred to as the 'funny bone' injury, which will sideline the team's closer for an indefinite period.
In response to Vodnik's injury, the team has taken immediate steps to bolster its pitching staff. Right-hander Keegan Thompson has been promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque to join the major league roster. To facilitate Thompson's addition to the 40-man roster, first baseman Blaine Crim has been designated for assignment. Vodnik, 26, made his last appearance on Monday, where he struggled, surrendering three runs on one hit and two walks over just 14 pitches. This season, he has recorded a 1-2 win-loss record with four saves and an elevated earned run average of 8.00 across 18 relief outings. His career statistics over parts of four seasons show a record of 11-9 with 23 saves and a 4.53 ERA. The Rockies are already contending with several other pitchers on the injured list, including starters Chase Dollander and Ryan Feltner, as well as reliever Jimmy Herget, highlighting a challenging period for the team's pitching depth.
Keegan Thompson, 31, brings a wealth of experience to the Rockies, having previously pitched for the Chicago Cubs from 2021 to 2024. During his tenure with the Cubs, he compiled a 17-11 record with five saves and a 3.64 ERA across 104 games, including 23 starts. This season at Albuquerque, Thompson posted a 1-3 record with a 3.34 ERA over 11 games. Meanwhile, Blaine Crim, 28, who has yet to play in the majors this season, had a .200 batting average with five home runs and 12 RBIs last year in a combined stint with the Texas Rangers and Colorado. He has been performing well for Albuquerque this season, batting .265 with seven homers and 35 RBIs in 36 games.
This situation underscores the unpredictable nature of professional sports, where injuries can swiftly alter team dynamics and provide opportunities for other athletes to step up. The Rockies' proactive adjustments reflect a commitment to maintaining competitive strength, and it is through such challenges that teams often discover new resolve and talent, reinforcing the spirit of perseverance and teamwork essential for success.
