Rutgers Wrestling 2026 Offseason: Roster Changes and Coaching Departures

The Rutgers wrestling program is undergoing a significant transformation during the 2026 offseason, marked by substantial roster changes and a notable coaching departure. With seven starters from the previous season having left, the team is poised to feature a remarkably young lineup. The wrestling transfer portal, which opened on April 1 and closes on April 30, is expected to be a crucial avenue for the Scarlet Knights to address roster gaps, particularly at heavyweight and 133 pounds.

A significant development for the program was the resignation of assistant coach Steve Mytych on April 7. Mytych, who served the team for four seasons, including three as an assistant, announced his departure via Instagram. He cited the evolving landscape of college athletics, specifically mentioning Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals and the transfer portal, as factors that prompted his reflection on his coaching values. Mytych expressed a desire for opportunities that more closely align with his passion for athlete development and long-term mentorship, beyond just immediate results or financial compensation.

Mytych's tenure at Rutgers was notable for his success in recruiting scholastic wrestlers from Pennsylvania. Several current Rutgers wrestlers with strong Pennsylvania connections, such as freshmen Tahir Parkins (141) and Devon Magro (149), sophomore Conner Harer (157), and redshirt freshman Mason Gibson (133/141), were brought into the program under his influence. Many of these athletes, including the Harer brothers, Parkins, Magro, and Gibson, were highly ranked nationally as recruits and are expected to play significant roles, potentially even starting positions, in the upcoming season. His departure leaves head coach Scott Goodale with a vacant assistant coaching position, which will be filled alongside current assistants Joe Pollard and Mikey Labriola.

Adding to the roster changes, Ayden Smith, the team's 125-pounder last season, reportedly entered the transfer portal on April 5. This decision was largely anticipated following the signing of four-time NJSIAA champion Anthony Knox, who is expected to take over the 125-pound spot. Smith's performance last season included qualifying for the NCAA Tournament and securing a key victory against Jore Volk, contributing to Rutgers' upset win over then No. 6 ranked Minnesota. His departure, along with other key losses such as Dylan Shawver (133), Joey Olivieri (141), Anthony White (157), Lenny Pinto (174), and Hunter Catka (HWT), underscores the extensive rebuilding effort facing the Rutgers wrestling team.

Looking ahead, the Scarlet Knights' lineup for the 2026-27 season will likely be dominated by freshmen and sophomores. Key returning wrestlers include Remy Cotton (197), a two-time national qualifier who was one win shy of All-American status last season, and Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184). Andrew Barbosa (165) is another returning NCAA qualifier. The influx of new talent, alongside the remaining experienced athletes, will define Rutgers' competitive outlook as they navigate a period of significant transition and aim to rebuild a formidable roster.
