Alina Martinson, a senior at Saugatuck High School, is forging her own path in the footsteps of her accomplished siblings. Having witnessed her brother and sister achieve NCAA Division I athletic status and contribute significantly to Saugatuck's track and field program, Alina has seamlessly integrated into this proud family tradition. Her performances have not only upheld but also further enhanced Saugatuck's esteemed running heritage.
From Cross Country Trails to Sprint Track: A Versatile Talent Shines
While Alina has garnered All-State recognition in cross country, her senior year has marked a remarkable shift towards excelling in track sprints. Coach Angelina Bauer lauds Martinson's exceptional versatility, emphasizing her ability to compete effectively across a wide range of distances, from the blistering 100 meters to the demanding 5K. This adaptability allows the coaching staff to strategically deploy her to maximize team points, a role Martinson embraces with a competitive spirit.

Collegiate Aspirations and Immediate Track Goals
Looking ahead, Martinson has committed to run at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, where she plans to focus on the 400 and 800-meter events. She anticipates this transition will be a significant step up in her athletic development. However, before fully committing to her collegiate career, Martinson has set her sights on achieving specific benchmarks in her final high school season. This year, her focus has intensified on sprints, including the 100 and 400 meters. She acknowledges the different mental and physical demands of sprinting, particularly the quicker pace and increased leg fatigue, and is determined to break the one-minute mark in the 400 meters.
Regional Triumph: Martinson Secures Double Titles
Martinson has already made significant strides toward her goals, having clinched regional championships in both the 400 meters and 800 meters at the Division 3 regional meet in Montague. Her winning times were 1:01.97 and 2:26.22, respectively, demonstrating her dominance in both events.
Team Performance at Division 3 Regionals: Saugatuck's Collective Success
The Saugatuck boys and girls track and field teams both demonstrated strong performances at the Division 3 regional competition. The boys' team secured a third-place finish with 80 points, trailing Belding (102) and Wyoming Potter's House (82.5). Black River and Fennville also participated, placing 14th and 15th, respectively, in the 17-team field. The girls' team also finished third, accumulating 87.5 points, behind Newaygo (113) and Grandville Calvin Christian (91). Fennville and Black River placed 10th and 15th, respectively, among the 16 girls' teams.
Individual Qualifications for the State Finals
Beyond Martinson's achievements, several other athletes from Saugatuck, Fennville, and Black River secured their spots at the Division 3 state finals. Saugatuck's Novella DeGraaf, returning from a knee injury, impressively won the pole vault and placed second in both the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump. The Saugatuck 4x800 relay team, comprising Kamryn Sixberry, Ellyse Heyser, Lyvia Curtis, and Savannah Vandenberg, also qualified. For Fennville, Isabelle Sliter qualified in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. In the boys' events, Saugatuck freshman Charlie Robison was a triple qualifier, winning the 100 meters and taking second in the 200 meters and 300 hurdles. Robison also contributed to the qualifying 4x400 relay team. Black River's Jonas Ballard, along with Saugatuck's Bowman and Monroe, qualified in the 3,200 meters, while Fennville's Julian Weimer won the long jump title.
Holland Calvary and Libertas Christian Shine at Division 4 Regionals
In the Division 4 regional competition held at Bretheren, the Holland Calvary boys' track and field team achieved a commendable second-place finish with 99 points, behind Mesick (146). Libertas Christian placed 13th. In the girls' meet, Calvary finished ninth and Libertas Christian tenth, with Mason County Eastern securing the top spot. Notable individual qualifiers for Calvary included Christian Getz and Gibson White in the 800 meters, Noah Schipper in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, and the 4x400 relay team. Adkins also performed well in the long jump. For the girls, Calvary's Alison Rotman qualified in the 400 meters, and Libertas Christian's Ellie Gottschall qualified in the 100 meters.
