Through community-driven online polls, Molly Conner of Portsmouth Christian Academy and Anthony Jurkoic of Newmarket High School emerged as the deserving recipients of the Athlete of the Week titles, a recognition proudly sponsored by York County Community College.
Top Athletes Honored for Exceptional Achievements
In a thrilling week for Seacoast high school sports, two remarkable student-athletes have been singled out for their impressive contributions. On the baseball diamond, Anthony Jurkoic, a key player for Newmarket High School, captivated voters, securing over 46% of the total 628 votes. His stellar performance on Saturday, June 13, in the Division IV state championship against Epping was pivotal. Jurkoic reached base three times, logging two hits and drawing a walk, ultimately scoring two crucial runs that helped lead the Mules to a 9-6 victory. His coach, Stan Jurkoic, expressed immense pride and gratitude for the community's support, noting Anthony's impactful presence in the championship game.
Meanwhile, on the softball field, Molly Conner, a force for Portsmouth Christian Academy, earned the girls' Athlete of the Week title. She garnered nearly 38% of the online votes, totaling 317. Conner's heroic efforts were instrumental in her team's success during the Division IV state championship on Saturday, June 13. Against Colebrook, she delivered a critical RBI double, skillfully stole third base, and then crossed home plate to tie the game, which PCA ultimately won 4-2. Her consistent power at the plate was further highlighted by another RBI double in the seventh inning, contributing to yet another score.
