A New Era for Wisconsin Athletics: Leadership Transition at a Critical Juncture

A Familiar Face Returns to Lead Wisconsin Athletics

Shawn Eichorst, a native of Lone Rock, Wisconsin, is making a comeback to Madison, taking on the prestigious role of athletics director for the Wisconsin Badgers. This appointment follows the departure of former athletics director Chris McIntosh, ushering in a new chapter for the university's sports department.

Eichorst's Extensive Career in Collegiate Athletics

Eichorst brings a wealth of experience to his new position. His career in collegiate athletics began with a tenure as athletics director at Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater from 1999 to 2003. He then transitioned to Wisconsin, where he held various capacities from 2006 to 2011, ultimately rising to the role of deputy athletics director. Following his time in Madison, Eichorst served as athletics director at Miami and later at Nebraska, a position he held until 2017. Most recently, he contributed his expertise as deputy athletics director at Texas.

Expressing Gratitude and Vision for the Future

In a statement, Eichorst conveyed his profound honor to return to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, highlighting its significance to him and his family. He emphasized Wisconsin's commitment to academic and competitive excellence, integrity, and service. Eichorst extended his gratitude to interim Chancellor Wilcots and the search committee for their trust in his leadership and vision for the future of Wisconsin Athletics.

Immediate Challenges and the Future of the Football Program

Eichorst's return places him at the helm of a Big Ten athletics department, where he is immediately confronted with key decisions, particularly concerning the football program. Coach Luke Fickell, now entering his fourth full season, holds a 17-21 record. Despite a substantial buyout securing Fickell's position for another year, the team's performance has seen diminishing returns since a 7-6 finish in his inaugural year. The Badgers are expected to achieve at least a bowl game appearance to ensure Fickell's continuation into a fifth season.
