Sinner Kicks Off Roland Garros Campaign Against French Wild Card

Jannik Sinner, the world's top-ranked tennis player, is embarking on his quest for a career Grand Slam at Roland Garros. His opening match will be against French wild-card entrant Clement Tabur. This significant clay-court tournament, the French Open, commences on Sunday and is set to conclude on June 7th. Sinner, a formidable force on the professional circuit, is aiming to make history by joining an elite group of male players who have captured all four major titles in the Open Era.

The draw for the prestigious French Open was officially unveiled on Thursday, outlining the initial matchups for the competitors. Sinner, at 24 years old, has already demonstrated his prowess on various surfaces, securing two Australian Open titles (2024, 2025), a U.S. Open championship (2024), and a Wimbledon victory (2025). His consistent performance across these major tournaments highlights his ambition to complete the career Grand Slam, a feat achieved by only six other men in the Open Era.

Among other notable contenders, second seed Alexander Zverev will commence his pursuit of a maiden Grand Slam trophy against local favorite Benjamin Bonzi. Zverev has previously reached the finals of the U.S. Open in 2020, the French Open in 2024, and the Australian Open in 2025, but a major title has thus far eluded him. Three-time French Open champion Novak Djokovic, seeded third, is positioned in the opposite half of the draw and will face France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard as he seeks his 25th major win.

Further down the seeding, Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime, the fourth seed, is slated to play Germany's Daniel Altmaier in his opening match. Meanwhile, two-time defending Roland Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz from Spain will unfortunately miss the tournament due to a wrist injury, which will also prevent his participation at Wimbledon this summer. Alcaraz famously defeated Sinner in a thrilling five-set encounter in last year's French Open final.

On the French side, Arthur Fils holds the highest seeding at No. 19 and will open against Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka, who is in his final season on the ATP Tour. Wawrinka himself was a French Open champion in 2015. Another French veteran, Gael Monfils, also in his farewell season, is set for an all-French showdown against compatriot Hugo Gaston in the first round. The highest-seeded American in the tournament, Ben Shelton, at No. 5, will begin his campaign against Spain's Daniel Merida.

This year's French Open promises an exciting display of skill and determination as these top athletes compete on the demanding clay courts of Paris. The early rounds will set the stage for intense rivalries and potential upsets, all leading towards the crowning of new champions and possibly, the creation of tennis history as Jannik Sinner eyes the elusive career Grand Slam.
