Southside High School has secured official approval from the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) to alter its athletic identity to Southside-Rainbow City. This modification, confirmed by boys' soccer coach Randy Vice, was ratified by the AHSAA on Tuesday, August 18th, following a request from the Etowah County Schools Board of Education nearly two weeks prior. This change has been a long-term objective for the school, aimed at more accurately reflecting the community it serves.
Previously, the school competed under the name Southside-Gadsden in statewide athletic events, a designation that appeared on all state championship trophies and individual accolades. The decision to transition to Southside-Rainbow City is rooted in the school's desire to encompass both the City of Southside and Rainbow City, from which it draws its student body. This distinction is particularly crucial given the presence of another institution, Southside-Selma, in the southern part of the state. While the athletic name has been updated, the school's academic designation will continue to be Southside High School.
Etowah County School superintendent Julie Talton emphasized that this naming adjustment is fundamentally about providing an accurate representation of the students, the institution, and the encompassing communities. Talton expressed gratitude to all organizations that facilitated this update, believing that it will enhance Southside High School's identity and its connection to Rainbow City. This strategic change is expected to foster a stronger sense of belonging and recognition for all students and residents involved.
This initiative exemplifies a progressive approach to school identity, ensuring that official designations accurately mirror the demographics and geographical representation of the student body. Such efforts contribute to a greater sense of community pride and inclusivity, affirming the diverse backgrounds that converge within the school's environment.
