Donnie Freeman, a forward for St. John's, will be absent for the entire 2026-27 athletic season following a severe Achilles tendon tear sustained during a recent training session.
Head coach Rick Pitino conveyed the news via social media, confirming that Freeman, who recently transferred from Syracuse, has already undergone surgical intervention to address the non-contact injury. Pitino expressed optimism about Freeman's recovery, stating his confidence that the player will return stronger than before. Freeman's absence marks a significant setback for the team, as he was anticipated to be a crucial contributor, having demonstrated impressive performance in his last season with Syracuse. During that period, he averaged 16.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, leading his former team in both categories despite being limited to 23 appearances due to a prior lower-body ailment. Throughout his two seasons and 37 games (34 starts) with the Orange, the 6-foot-9 forward maintained averages of 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists.
This unfortunate injury underscores the unpredictable challenges athletes face, yet it also highlights the resilience and determination often seen in their journey toward recovery. Freeman's dedication and the support from his team and coaching staff will undoubtedly be pivotal as he navigates this rehabilitation period, aiming for a triumphant return to the court.
