A New Era for Volunteer Pitching: Experience Meets Opportunity
Introducing Austin Knight: A New Leader for Tennessee's Pitching Staff
The University of Tennessee baseball program proudly announced on Saturday the addition of Austin Knight to its coaching staff. Knight will assume the crucial role of pitching coach, bringing a wealth of expertise and a history of cultivating top-tier pitching talent.
Knight's Journey to Rocky Top: From East Carolina to Knoxville
Before joining the Volunteers, Austin Knight dedicated five successful seasons to East Carolina as their pitching coach. His tenure there was marked by significant achievements in developing effective pitching rotations. Prior to his full-time coaching position, he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Pirates, eventually earning a promotion on July 7, 2021, demonstrating his commitment and capability.
Building a Foundation: Knight's Early Coaching Career
Knight's coaching path began with a stint at Louisiana Tech, where he arrived on September 4, 2019, following two years at the institution. In his capacity as a volunteer assistant, he primarily focused on working with catchers and played an instrumental role in managing the Bulldogs' camp operations. This period provided him with valuable foundational experience in collegiate baseball coaching.
Developing Talent: Graduate Manager Role at Little Rock
Preceding his time at Louisiana Tech, Knight further honed his coaching skills as a graduate manager for two years at Little Rock. During this period, he continued to specialize in coaching catchers and actively contributed to the team's recruiting efforts and travel logistics, expanding his responsibilities and preparing him for more advanced roles.
Collegiate Roots: Knight's Playing Days at Ole Miss
Austin Knight's deep understanding of the game stems from his own playing career as a four-year letterman at Ole Miss. From 2012 to 2015, he excelled as a catcher, gaining firsthand experience in the demands and strategies of high-level collegiate baseball. He is a proud alumnus of Sumrall High School in Sumrall, Mississippi, where his baseball journey began.
A Coaching Transition: The Departure of Josh Reynolds
The announcement of Knight's hiring comes shortly after a change in the Volunteers' coaching staff. On Thursday, head coach Josh Elander confirmed the departure of pitching coach Josh Reynolds, who served with the team for one season. Reynolds had also previously held the position of director of pitching performance under former head coach Tony Vitello in 2025.
Elander's Vision: High Hopes for Knight's Impact
Head coach Josh Elander expressed immense optimism regarding Austin Knight's appointment. "We are thrilled to welcome Austin Knight, his wife Taylor, and their two sons, Deacon and Clayton, to the Tennessee family," Elander stated. He highlighted Knight's impressive record of developing successful pitching staffs and his ability to recruit top talent. Elander emphasized that Knight's values perfectly align with the team's culture, and he anticipates a profoundly positive influence on the student-athletes and the overall program.
