Aggies' Backfield Brilliance: A New Era of Rushing Power
Enhanced Backfield Depth and Competition
The Texas A&M Aggies are entering the 2026 season with a significantly fortified running back roster, a marked improvement compared to previous years. The return of senior Rueben Owens to the starting lineup is a major boost, complemented by the ascendance of sophomore Jamarion Morrow, whose exceptional talent during his freshman year indicates he will be a strong contender for the starting position.
Owens' Journey: From Leadership to Consistency
Last season, Rueben Owens stepped into a leading role after an injury sidelined veteran Le'Veon Moss. Owens concluded the year as the Aggies' top rusher with 639 yards and five touchdowns, both personal bests. However, his performance saw a dip in the latter half of the season, particularly during crucial games against Texas and Miami in the College Football Playoff, highlighting a need for sustained consistency.
Morrow's Emergence: A Star in the Making
Jamarion Morrow, a former five-star recruit, stands at an imposing 5'11" and weighs over 220 pounds, possessing the physical attributes to potentially dominate the SEC in rushing. His offseason improvements were clearly visible during the Aggies' Maroon & White Game on April 18, where he demonstrated exceptional one-cut running abilities, suggesting he could challenge Owens for the primary ball-carrier role.
The Offensive Line: Paving the Way for Success
Both Owens and Morrow will benefit from a revitalized offensive line featuring four new starters. This unit already showed considerable improvement in run blocking during the spring game, creating ample opportunities for Morrow to exploit gaps and deliver explosive runs, reminiscent of Le'Veon Moss's impactful 2024 season.
National Recognition and Future Prospects
Jamarion Morrow's potential has not gone unnoticed. Roc Boys Football has included him as the third-ranked breakout candidate among Power Four running backs in their preseason watch list. During his 2025 freshman season, Morrow amassed 182 rushing yards and a touchdown, averaging 4.2 yards per carry, setting the stage for a much bigger role in the upcoming season.
