Texas Tech Coach Joey McGuire Addresses Quarterback Challenges and Rivarly with Texas

During Big 12 media days, Texas Tech's head coach, Joey McGuire, candidly spoke about navigating a challenging offseason marked by the unexpected departure of quarterback Brendan Sorsby. McGuire emphasized the team's strong focus on their athletic pursuits despite recent difficulties, highlighting how shared experiences of adversity have strengthened their collective bond. He also conveyed his full confidence in Will Hammond, who is set to take over as the starting quarterback, and reiterated his eagerness for a showdown with long-standing rival Texas, stressing the deep-rooted tradition of their in-state football matchups.

Addressing reporters and cameras at Big 12 media days in Frisco, Texas, Coach McGuire opened by playfully stating his enthusiasm for the event, acknowledging the tough questions he anticipated regarding the team's recent tribulations. He alluded to the controversy surrounding Brendan Sorsby, whose gambling addiction led to his ineligibility and subsequent departure from the team, forcing Texas Tech to adjust their quarterback plans for the upcoming season.

McGuire remained steadfast, asserting that the team had channeled their shared hardships into a unifying force. He noted that the atmosphere within the team's training facilities—from the weight room to practices—remained undisturbed, projecting an image of unwavering dedication despite the off-field distractions. Sorsby, who had joined Texas Tech as a top transfer quarterback, sought treatment for gambling addiction, admitted to significant wagering, and was ultimately declared ineligible by the NCAA. Instead of pursuing avenues to play in 2026, Sorsby chose to focus on preparing for the 2027 NFL Draft.

With Sorsby no longer an option, Will Hammond is slated to become the starting quarterback. Hammond, who served as a backup in the successful 2025 season, previously suffered an ACL injury. McGuire revealed that concerns about Hammond's knee were a factor in pursuing a seasoned player like Sorsby in the transfer market. However, he expressed relief that Hammond has experienced no setbacks in his recovery and maintains a strong belief in his own abilities. McGuire further mentioned that Hammond's leadership and captivating personality have garnered significant trust from his teammates, making him a fitting choice to lead the team.

The press conference concluded with McGuire responding to recent comments from Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, who had seemingly disparaged a rival's easy schedule, implicitly targeting Texas Tech. McGuire retorted by challenging the Longhorns to a game, expressing a fervent desire for the two teams to compete. He articulated his profound respect for Sarkisian's achievements but emphasized the significance of traditional in-state rivalries, such as those between Texas Tech and Texas, and Texas A&M and Texas. He argued that it is counterproductive for Texas teams to seek non-conference opponents outside the state when such high-caliber football is played within their own borders, underscoring the importance of preserving these historic matchups.
