Tim Brosnan Appointed as Big East Commissioner

Tim Brosnan has been announced as the sixth commissioner for the Big East Conference, stepping into the role previously held by Val Ackerman. This significant appointment marks a new era for the conference, bringing Brosnan's extensive background in media, sports management, and business leadership to the forefront. His career, highlighted by a long and impactful tenure at Major League Baseball, positions him uniquely to steer the Big East through the evolving landscape of college athletics, with a particular focus on enhancing revenue generation and fostering strategic partnerships.

The transition follows Val Ackerman's announcement of her retirement in April, concluding 13 years of dedicated service as commissioner. The selection process for her successor was spearheaded by a search committee led by St. John's president, Rev. Brian J. Shanley. The committee's primary objective was to find a leader who possessed a proven track record in generating revenue, a critical skill set in today's collegiate sports environment.

Rev. Shanley expressed confidence in Brosnan's capabilities, remarking on his reputation as an intelligent and respected leader. He underscored Brosnan's commitment to service and his strong personal and professional ethics. Furthermore, Shanley emphasized that Brosnan's demonstrated ability to forge highly successful partnerships would be indispensable for the Big East's future in the dynamic realm of college sports. Brosnan's professional journey includes a distinguished 24-year period with Major League Baseball, spanning from 1991 to 2015. During this time, he occupied various executive positions and also served as CEO of Major League Baseball Enterprises. After his departure from MLB, he established a sports media consultancy, further solidifying his expertise in the industry. His deep connection to the Big East dates back to his collegiate days, where he was a four-year letter winner on the Georgetown baseball team, giving him a personal understanding of the conference's rich history and competitive spirit.

Brosnan himself conveyed profound gratitude and honor for the opportunity to lead the Big East, acknowledging its status as an iconic brand within college sports. He articulated his eagerness to guide the conference into its next chapter, signaling a forward-looking approach to its continued growth and success.

Tim Brosnan's appointment as the new commissioner is poised to bring fresh leadership and a strategic vision to the Big East Conference. His vast experience in sports administration and business development, combined with his personal connection to the conference, makes him a fitting choice to build upon Val Ackerman's legacy and navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead in college athletics. His tenure, commencing on September 1, is anticipated to focus on innovation and growth, ensuring the Big East remains a prominent and influential force in the collegiate sports landscape.
