Brosnan is expected to succeed Val Ackerman, who is stepping down at the end of August after a commendable thirteen-year tenure. Upon his appointment, Brosnan will become the sixth individual to hold the commissioner position, following a line of influential leaders including Dave Gavitt, Mike Tranghese, John Marinatto, Mike Aresco, and Ackerman herself.

During his time at MLB, Brosnan played a key role in the development and launch of major initiatives such as the MLB Network and the World Baseball Classic. His vast experience in business strategy and television deals is anticipated to be a valuable asset in his new role. Under his leadership, MLB witnessed substantial revenue growth, soaring from an estimated $1.5 billion in 1991 to nearly $8.5 billion by his departure in early 2015.

In 2014, Brosnan was considered a strong candidate to succeed Bud Selig as MLB commissioner but ultimately withdrew his name and left the organization shortly thereafter. Rob Manfred, Selig's successor, then tasked Tony Petitti, who at the time headed MLB Network, with taking over some of Brosnan's former responsibilities. Interestingly, Petitti was later named commissioner of the Big Ten Conference nine years later.

Until about a year ago, he served as Chairman/CEO and played a part in establishing the "Hoyas Rising" support collective, which launched in 2023, showcasing his ongoing commitment to the collegiate sports landscape.
