Trey Mancini Opts for Free Agency After Angels Stint

Trey Mancini, an experienced first baseman and outfielder, has declared his free agency. This decision comes after the Los Angeles Angels recently removed him from their active roster, known as designating for assignment.

After clearing waivers, Mancini was assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake, where he had begun his season. However, he chose to reject this assignment, instead opting to explore his options as a free agent. Mancini’s brief return to the major league spotlight with the Angels on June 8th, his first appearance since July 2023, saw him make a significant impact by going 3-for-4 with an RBI in his debut. Over five games and three starts for the Angels, who were dealing with numerous injuries, he recorded four hits, including a triple, and four RBIs, before his latest designation. The 34-year-old’s career highlights include playing 836 MLB games, achieving a .263 batting average, 129 home runs, and 404 RBIs across his tenures with the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, and the Angels. Notably, Mancini bravely battled and overcame Stage 3 colon cancer, missing the entire 2020 season before making a triumphant return in 2021.

In other team news, the Angels have reactivated designated hitter and outfielder Jorge Soler from the injured list. Soler had been sidelined with an oblique strain since June 3rd, and was batting .220 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs in 58 games. Concurrently, infielder Nick Madrigal was designated for assignment; he had a .273 batting average in 15 games for the Angels, marking his first major league action since 2024 with the Cubs.

Mancini's journey serves as an inspiring testament to perseverance and determination, both on and off the field. His courage in overcoming significant health challenges and continuing to pursue his passion for baseball exemplifies the indomitable spirit of athletes. As he enters free agency, it represents a new beginning, filled with potential for future achievements and continued contributions to the sport he loves.
