US Visa Rejection Thwarts Boxer Joe Cordina's World Title Bid

Welsh boxing sensation Joe Cordina's ambitions of clinching a third world title and making his debut in an American ring have been abruptly halted. A visa rejection from the United States embassy in London has led to the cancellation of his much-anticipated WBO lightweight championship contest against American contender Abdullah Mason.

Visa Issues Derail Cordina's Championship Dream

In a surprising turn of events, the high-stakes WBO lightweight title showdown between Welsh pugilist Joe Cordina and American boxing talent Abdullah Mason, originally slated for Saturday, July 4th, in Cleveland, has been called off. The unforeseen obstacle arose when the 34-year-old former super-featherweight world champion, Cordina, was denied entry into the United States.

Cordina, expressing profound disappointment on social media, recounted his experience at the US embassy in London. Despite presenting comprehensive documentation to substantiate his entry, his visa application was ultimately rejected. He described feeling “absolutely gutted” by the decision, emphasizing that this fight represented a significant milestone: an opportunity to become a three-time, two-weight world champion and fulfill a long-held ambition of competing for a world title on American soil.

Addressing rampant speculation, Cordina vehemently denied any suggestions that the cancellation stemmed from an injury, asserting that he had undergone an excellent training camp and was in prime condition. He also expressed regret for his opponent, Mason, whose first title defense this bout was set to be, following a memorable victory over Sam Noakes in November 2025.

Hailing from Cardiff, Cordina had been determined to secure a second world title in a different weight class. His professional career, marked by 19 fights, saw a solitary defeat in May 2024, when he lost his IBF 130lb world title to Anthony Cacace. Since then, he has meticulously rebuilt his momentum, capturing the vacant WBO global lightweight title by defeating Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz and subsequently dominating Gabriel Flores Jr. in California in December 2025, solidifying his position as Mason's top challenger. Cordina's illustrious amateur career included an Olympic appearance and training alongside figures like Anthony Joshua within Team GB.

Cordina's journey in professional boxing began in 2017, culminating in him becoming Wales' 13th world champion boxer with his IBF super-featherweight title win against Kenichi Ogawa in June 2022. Though a broken hand forced him to relinquish that title within the mandatory 90-day defense window, he courageously reclaimed it through a hard-fought split decision against Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov in April 2023. His intended comeback against Shakur Stevenson in October 2024 was also thwarted due to Stevenson's hand injury. After a 14-month hiatus, Cordina returned to the ring in July 2025, securing a points victory over Gonzalez Quiroz in Manchester, and later triumphing over Flores Jr. despite a points deduction for a rabbit punch, demonstrating his resilience and skill.

This unfortunate turn of events highlights the intricate and sometimes unpredictable challenges athletes face outside the sporting arena, where bureaucratic hurdles can unexpectedly derail years of dedication and hard work. Cordina's experience serves as a stark reminder that even at the pinnacle of their careers, professional athletes are not immune to external factors that can impact their pursuit of greatness. His determination to overcome this setback and continue his quest for championship glory will undoubtedly be a compelling narrative for boxing enthusiasts to follow.
