As the MLS season restarts after a two-month break for the World Cup, New York City FC and the Columbus Crew are poised for a significant matchup. This game will see former USMNT colleagues transform into direct competitors, showcasing the unique dynamics of club football. Both teams have also utilized this hiatus to make strategic roster adjustments, setting the stage for an intriguing contest as they aim to bolster their positions in the league standings.
The upcoming match on Wednesday marks the resumption of the MLS season for both New York City FC and the Columbus Crew, following an extensive World Cup break. This fixture carries added intrigue as it pits former USMNT teammates, goalkeeper Matt Freese of NYCFC and midfielder Max Arfsten of the Crew, against each other. Both players represented the United States in their journey to the round of 16 in the World Cup, experiencing national camaraderie before returning to their respective club rivalries. Arfsten, while acknowledging Freese's experience in MLS, expressed a playful desire to score against his former national team colleague. Additionally, Freese has since reunited with NYCFC teammates Kai Trewin and Aiden O'Neill, who played for the Australian side defeated by the U.S. in the group stage. The competitive spirit will temporarily subside for Arfsten and Freese, as they are slated to briefly rejoin forces for the MLS All-Stars against Mexico's Liga MX All-Stars later this month, an event that will also feature the Crew's Steven Moreira, a key defender for Cape Verde in the World Cup.
Player Transitions and Roster Enhancements Post-World Cup
During the World Cup interlude, both New York City FC and the Columbus Crew undertook significant overhauls of their squads. New York City FC welcomed back midfielder James Sands on June 18, following a year-and-a-half loan spell with German club FC St. Pauli, indicating his potential availability for the upcoming game. Sands has expressed enthusiasm for playing under coach Pascal Jansen, praising his demanding yet developmental coaching style, which he believes will significantly enhance his performance.
Conversely, the Columbus Crew saw their leading scorer, Diego Rossi, depart to CF Monterrey in Liga MX on July 3. To offset this loss and strengthen their team, the Crew made several strategic acquisitions. They brought in midfielder Brais Mendez from Spain's Real Sociedad, midfielder Lautaro Giaccone from Argentinos Juniors of the Argentine Primera Division, and seasoned defender Eric Bailly, formerly of Manchester United and Ivory Coast. These new players are currently awaiting their work visas, highlighting the logistical aspects involved in international player transfers and their impact on team readiness.
