USWNT to Host Spain in October Friendlies

The U.S. Women's National Team is set to engage in two high-profile exhibition matches against Spain, the world's top-ranked team, this October, as confirmed by U.S. Soccer. These eagerly awaited contests will bring together two of women's soccer's most dominant forces: the U.S. team, current Olympic gold medalists, and the Spanish squad, who hold the title of reigning FIFA Women's World Cup champions.

Scheduled for October 10th, the first encounter will take place at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., followed by a second match on October 13th at Subaru Park in Chester, Pa. These fixtures are particularly significant given that the United States currently ranks second globally, just behind Spain, according to the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. Emma Hayes, head coach of the USWNT, expressed her enthusiasm for these matchups, highlighting the team's long-standing desire to compete against Spain and recognizing the logistical challenges of securing such top-tier opponents within the international women's soccer calendar. She views these games as ideal tests in advance of the World Cup qualifying rounds later in the year.

Historically, the U.S. and Spain have met on four occasions. The USWNT claimed victory in their first three encounters before experiencing a 2-0 defeat in Pamplona, Spain, in 2022. Adding to the significance of the upcoming friendlies, a special pre-game retirement ceremony will be held before the October 10th match in Washington, D.C., to honor Crystal Dunn, a celebrated defender for the USWNT. Dunn, who was named the 2015 NWSL MVP during her time with the Washington Spirit, will be celebrated in the nation's capital.

These upcoming matches between two of the world's premier women's soccer teams are more than just friendly games; they represent a convergence of athletic excellence and a testament to the growing stature of women's sports globally. The contests will provide invaluable experience for both sides, showcasing elite talent and inspiring fans with the competitive spirit and dedication of these extraordinary athletes. Such events foster greater appreciation for the sport and encourage aspiring athletes to pursue their dreams with passion and perseverance.
