Utah Grizzlies to Relocate, Ending 28-Year Legacy in the State

For nearly three decades, the Utah Grizzlies have been the sole professional ice hockey team representing the state. However, their long-standing presence is drawing to a close, with the team's final local game slated for Sunday. Following a sale to Pro Hockey Partners, LLC, the Grizzlies are embarking on a new chapter, transitioning to Trenton, New Jersey, where they will assume the new identity of the Trenton Ironhawks.

The decision to move was less about competitive pressures from other local sports entities, such as the Utah Mammoth offering NHL tickets at comparable prices, and more a reflection of internal shifts within the organization. The passing of long-time owner David Elmore in 2023, followed by President and CEO Kevin Bruder in 2025, coupled with the declining health of Elmore's wife, Donna Tuttle, necessitated a change in stewardship. This confluence of events led to the ownership’s decision to transfer control of the franchise.

As their time in Utah nears its end, the Grizzlies are demonstrating remarkable resilience. With four games remaining, including a visit to the Idaho Steelheads and a three-game homestand against the Rapid City Rush, the team is focused on a strong finish. Saturday’s game against the Rush has been designated “Fan Appreciation Night,” a special occasion to honor the team's rich history and dedicated fan base. Coming off three consecutive wins and a dominant performance of six victories in their last seven outings, the Grizzlies are determined to conclude their Utah chapter on a high note, leaving behind a legacy of competitive spirit.

The Grizzlies’ journey in Salt Lake City began in the 1995–96 season, when they relocated from Denver. Notably, they had secured the Turner Cup, the championship of the now-defunct International Hockey League, in their previous season. Their move was prompted by Denver acquiring an NHL team. Upon their arrival in Utah, the team continued its winning ways, clinching another Turner Cup in their inaugural year.

After the IHL disbanded, the Grizzlies transitioned to the American Hockey League for four seasons before settling in the ECHL, where they have remained until the present day. Throughout their history, the team has served as a secondary minor-league affiliate for several NHL franchises, including the New York Islanders, Calgary Flames, Anaheim Ducks, and Colorado Avalanche. Over the years, many notable hockey figures have honed their skills with the Grizzlies, whether at the start of their careers, during NHL lockouts, or in their post-major-league playing days. This roster of talent includes Hockey Hall of Famer Scott Niedermayer, NHL All-Stars Todd Bertuzzi and Ray Whitney, IIHL Hall of Famer Žigmund Pálffy, and current NHL head coaches Jim Montgomery, Sheldon Keefe, and Scott Arniel.

The upcoming departure of the Utah Grizzlies marks the end of a significant era for professional hockey in the state. While the team’s relocation to Trenton, New Jersey, signifies a new beginning for the franchise, it also prompts reflection on their substantial contributions to Utah's sports landscape over nearly three decades. The team's final games offer a poignant opportunity for fans to celebrate the Grizzlies' enduring legacy and competitive spirit, acknowledging their place in the hearts of hockey enthusiasts.
