The University of Virginia's women's basketball program recently introduced its new head coach, Aaron Roussell, to the Roanoke Valley Sports Club. Roussell, who assumed the role in April, previously achieved notable success over seven seasons with the University of Richmond's Spiders, guiding them to an impressive 148-72 record and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Under his leadership, the Spiders also secured the 2024 Atlantic-10 tournament title and back-to-back regular-season A10 championships in 2024 and 2025.
Addressing the club members in Salem, Coach Roussell expressed his appreciation for the region's strong sporting enthusiasm. He recounted his prior visit to the area approximately 13 years ago for an awards presentation, noting the passionate fan bases for various university teams, including Virginia Tech, UVA, and James Madison University. He articulated his excitement about representing the Cavaliers, adorned in their distinctive orange and blue, within this dedicated community.
Having accumulated a career record of 460-194 over 22 seasons, this position marks Roussell's fourth head coaching appointment at the collegiate level. His extensive experience and proven ability to build winning programs instill confidence in the future trajectory of the UVA women's basketball team.
The appointment of Coach Roussell signals a new era for UVA women's basketball, emphasizing strategic development and a commitment to excellence. His vision for the team, coupled with his understanding of the region's sports landscape, promises to foster a dynamic and successful environment for both players and fans alike.
