Varun Chakravarthy's Enduring Drive and Strategic Approach to Cricket

Indian cricketer Varun Chakravarthy, at 35 years old, showcases a distinctive outlook on his career trajectory, asserting he is merely at its midpoint despite a late international debut and significant achievements, including a T20 World Cup triumph. His journey is characterized by resilience through injuries and an unconventional, analytical approach to training, recovery, and even equipment, underscoring a continuous quest for improvement.

Varun Chakravarthy's Resilient Return and Strategic Mindset

In a recent conversation with TimesofIndia.com, facilitated by ASICS, the acclaimed equipment manufacturer, Varun Chakravarthy, now 35, reflected on his remarkable career. Having made his international debut at the age of 29, the enigmatic spinner's professional life has been a dynamic blend of triumphs and trials. Last year saw him clinch a T20 World Cup title on home turf, emerging as India's joint-leading wicket-taker with 14 scalps, navigate a demanding IPL season despite hairline fractures in his left hand and toe, and confront his first-ever muscle injury, which necessitated an extensive period of rehabilitation.

Despite these experiences, Chakravarthy maintains a refreshingly singular perspective on his journey. "At this stage of my career, I still feel I'm in my first half of my career because I started cricket very late. So I still feel there's a long way to go," he articulated. This outlook illuminates his unorthodox ascent, highlighting his preference for incremental enhancements over grand career milestones. In the unpredictable realm of T20 cricket, his focus remains steadfastly on the immediate next improvement.

Having fully recuperated from a Grade 2 left hamstring injury sustained during the England T20I series, Chakravarthy is poised for a rigorous schedule. This includes three T20Is against Afghanistan, a groundbreaking one-off international match against Japan, and participation in the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, where defending champions India will commence their campaign directly from the quarterfinals.

Adapting to a New Challenge: Muscle Injuries

Until this summer, Chakravarthy's experience with physical setbacks typically involved impact-related incidents. A torn muscle, however, presented an entirely new challenge. He explained, "This is actually my first ever muscle injury. So all of my injuries have been impact injuries and other accidents that have happened on field. The expertise at CoE helped me and people helped me to gain my confidence. Every person working there helped me."

His recovery involved rigorous sessions at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where regaining confidence was as crucial as physical rehabilitation. The process was demanding. "Definitely, I spent a lot of time there and did a lot of running and did a lot of strength training, which helped me." For a bowler whose effectiveness hinges on rhythm and deception, returning to play transcends mere medical clearance; it requires an absolute trust in one's physical capabilities to unleash creative deliveries. "Yeah, it will take some time to gain confidence. But once you gain confidence, you just start becoming more expressive and that's how it is," the 35-year-old mused.

Chakravarthy views injury layoffs not as lost time but as valuable opportunities to refine aspects of his game that continuous competition rarely permits. "When you're away, you can start sharpening your skills. You can upskill yourself, which you don't get much time to do when you're playing continuously."

The Unsung Importance of Footwear for Spinners

While often associated with intricate wrist movements and precise release points, Chakravarthy emphasizes the foundational role of footwear in a spinner's arsenal. His collaboration with ASICS, although commercial, originated from his personal endorsement of their products, having transitioned to their shoes in 2022, well before formally signing a deal in January 2026.

His detailed breakdown of footwear requirements offers insightful revelations. "For a bowler, shoes are the biggest equipment they can have. Batters, they have many other equipments, but for a bowler, it's the shoes only," Varun stated. He further elaborated on the specific needs of spinners: "As a spinner, your feet start becoming little broader as in it starts changing shape once you pivot because the spinners have to pivot more after landing. So broad shoes in the toe area that is very important." He also highlights the importance of a supportive heel counter and a lighter weight as essential components of a spinner's ideal footwear.

This meticulous attention to detail exemplifies Chakravarthy's transition from an aspiring architect to an elite cricketer: a journey marked by analytical thought, process-oriented development, and a relentless pursuit of marginal advantages.

Beyond the Boundary: Curiosity at the Asian Games

The upcoming Asian Games, commencing on September 19, offer a unique experience that even ICC events cannot replicate: a shared sporting village with athletes from a multitude of disciplines. For Chakravarthy, this presents a significant draw. "It's my first time in Japan. I've never been to Japan and any games also. So all I've played is ICC tournaments and ACC tournaments," Chakravarthy expressed with clear excitement. "I'm very much looking forward to meeting other athletes also from other different sports and all those things." He eagerly anticipates observing the preparation routines of athletes from diverse fields, stating, "I want to see how a 100-metre athlete prepares himself, how a badminton professional prepares himself or herself."

In India's increasingly congested cricket calendar, opportunities for cross-disciplinary interaction are rare. The Asian Games provide a distinctive window into athletic cultures that cricketers seldom encounter. This openness and adaptability will likely prove invaluable on the field as well. The pitches at Korogi Sports Park are anticipated to differ significantly from the familiar Indian surfaces, and Chakravarthy believes that flexibility and improvisation, rather than preconceived strategies, will be paramount to the bowling attack's success.

Varun Chakravarthy's narrative is a compelling testament to the power of a growth mindset, strategic thinking, and unwavering dedication. His journey underscores that success in elite sports is not merely about talent, but also about a deep, analytical engagement with every facet of one's craft, coupled with an insatiable curiosity and an openness to learning from diverse experiences. His continued pursuit of excellence, even in the latter stages of his career, serves as an inspiring blueprint for aspiring athletes.
