His strong performance in the minor leagues, including a .524 batting average with three home runs and six RBIs in his last six games, earned him this call-up. Despite having his shortstop role in New York taken over by rookie George Lombard Jr., Volpe has demonstrated versatility by playing second base, shortstop, and third base while in Triple-A, hitting .295 with 10 homers and 21 RBIs over 27 games.
Volpe's season with the Yankees was initially delayed until May 13 as he recuperated from surgery in October for a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Prior to this recall, he had been batting .240 with one home run and 19 RBIs in 56 appearances for New York. Meanwhile, Jazz Chisholm Jr. has unfortunately seen recurring stints on the injured list since joining the Yankees in July 2024. Last season, he missed over a month due to a strained right oblique, and in 2024, a headfirst slide led to a nearly two-week absence because of a sprained left elbow.
