The Amarillo Globe-News has launched the second phase of its annual search for the Happy State Bank Fan Favorite High School Athlete of the Year, spotlighting exceptional female athletes. Following an initial round of nominations and voting that spanned the academic year and recognized 35 weekly winners, 16 remarkable young women have emerged as semifinalists. This current voting period, which runs from Monday through Thursday, will determine the elite eight who will move on to the final stage of this prestigious competition. Each week, the vote counts are reset, ensuring a fresh start for all contenders.

Since September, the Amarillo Globe-News has consistently highlighted outstanding high school athletic achievements. Through a process involving public nominations and careful selection, finalists were chosen for the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week. This initiative culminated in the selection of 35 athletes, showcasing a diverse range of talents across various sports and schools in the region.

The current round specifically focuses on the girls' division, inviting readers to cast their votes for their favorite among the 16 semifinalists. Notable early leaders include McKinzi McManus from Kelton, Mia Gomez from Hereford, and Khloe Griffit from Vega, who demonstrated strong support in the preceding week. The eight athletes who garner the most votes by the end of this week's period will secure their spot in the highly anticipated final round.

The competition celebrates female athletes from schools of varying sizes, representing a broad spectrum of athletic programs. The final voting for the Happy State Bank boys' high school athlete of the year is scheduled to commence on Monday, June 29, followed by the girls' final round on Monday, July 6. This staggered approach ensures ample opportunity for each category to receive dedicated attention and support from the community.
