The Washington Commanders recently set their preliminary 53-player roster, a lineup that is poised for modifications. Initially, the team included only three cornerbacks, with Trey Amos placed on injured reserve. This situation will soon change as Fabian Moreau is anticipated to rejoin the team following the placement of Laremy Tunsil and Johnny Newton on injured reserve. The roster also features ten offensive linemen and seven wide receivers. While the wide receiver group seems stable, further adjustments are expected for the offensive line. Consequently, the team's primary concerns for the upcoming 2026 season are focused on the cornerback and offensive line positions.
As of Monday, all 32 NFL teams are permitted to establish their 16-member practice squads. Teams that include a player from the International Player Pathway Program are granted an exemption, allowing them to carry 17 players. The Commanders will actively be adding players to their practice squad, and updates on these additions will be provided as they occur.
Teams are allowed to sign 16 players to the practice squad. Out of these, six can be veterans with unlimited NFL experience, while the remaining ten spots are reserved for players with two or fewer accrued NFL seasons. On game days, each team has the option to elevate up to two practice squad players to the active roster. After the game, these players return to the practice squad. A player can be elevated up to three times within a single season without being officially signed to the 53-man roster.
This structured approach to roster management and practice squad utilization ensures teams have the flexibility to adapt to injuries and performance fluctuations throughout the season, fostering a dynamic environment for player development and competitive readiness.
