The Williamsport Crosscutters have etched their name in the annals of baseball history, achieving an unprecedented season sweep in the 2026 MLB Draft League. This remarkable feat includes clinching both the first and second regular-season pennants, culminating in a decisive victory in the league championship game. Their dominant run has established a new benchmark for excellence within the league.
The championship encounter on Wednesday evening saw the Crosscutters face off against the Aberdeen IronBirds at the iconic Historic Bowman Field. In a hard-fought contest, Williamsport emerged victorious with a final score of 5-3. This triumph not only secured the league title but also solidified their status as the first team in the MLB Draft League's history to claim both regular-season pennants and the postseason championship.
The IronBirds initiated the scoring in the second inning, with Brylan West's double driving in Max Galvin, giving them an early advantage. However, the Crosscutters quickly retaliated in the third inning, igniting their offense. Chris Stanfield's RBI single brought home Sam DeCarlo, leveling the score. Immediately following, Jack Kail's powerful double to right field drove in both Stanfield and Joey DeMucci, propelling Williamsport into the lead.
Williamsport extended their lead in the seventh inning. After an RBI from Aberdeen's Taj Bates narrowed the gap, the Cutters responded with two crucial insurance runs. Nick Romano's groundout allowed James McCoy to score, followed by Nick Barone's single to center field, bringing in Matt Williams and expanding their lead to 5-2. Although Bates managed another RBI for Aberdeen in the top of the eighth, cutting the lead to 5-3, it was not enough to spark a comeback.
The bullpen proved instrumental in sealing the victory. Matthew Mariano, a graduate of SUNY Albany, delivered a stellar performance, pitching 1.3 scoreless innings to quash any hopes of an IronBirds rally and secure the championship. Starting pitcher Bobby Helt earned the win for Williamsport, pitching 4.0 innings, recording six strikeouts, and allowing only one run. Josh Willitts also contributed significantly, throwing 3.2 innings and setting the stage for Mariano's save.
The Crosscutters demonstrated consistent excellence throughout the season, finishing the first half with an impressive 20-7 record. They continued their strong performance into the second half, concluding with a 27-19 record, leading to an outstanding overall season record of 47-26.
The Williamsport Crosscutters' journey to the 2026 MLB Draft League championship is a testament to their unwavering dedication and exceptional teamwork. By becoming the first team to sweep both regular-season pennants and the league title, they have set a new standard of achievement. This historic season, marked by strategic plays and resilient performances, culminates in a well-deserved victory that will be remembered in the league's history.
